While photographing some of these old, abandoned buildings I was struck by how much they reminded me of far more ancient and famous ruins.

Rhyolite Bank and School Ruins

Ruins of the school and bank at sunrise in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Rhyolite is a mining ghost town just east of the California/Nevada border between Death Valley National Park and Beatty, Nevada.

When we arrived at Rhyolite just before dawn, it looked like the light was perhaps not going to cooperate. While parts of the sky were quite blue, there was a layer of clouds to the east where the sun was rising. At times the light turned out to be flat and gray, but every so often it would come through the clouds and wash the scene in this wonderful warm light.

I arrived too late for the finish of the February 20 Modesto to San Jose stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California. As I ran toward the race route through downtown San Jose I saw the first two riders go by a couple hundred feet ahead of me. Aw, darn! Anyway, I set up at the first corner I came to and photographed the rest of the pack as they came through the second-to-last turn of the race.

I photographed this minimalist seascape along the Pacific Ocean coastline south of San Francisco, California during the summer of 2006. One goal was to convey a sense of the space and distance in this scene, and the inclusion of the very small images of the gulls in the foreground was part of this.
