Fog bank above a coastal ranch in a meadow along the Pacific Coast Highway

This little meadow, filled with yellow flowers, is in the upper section of the Big Sur coast of California, where I made a very quick trip early on the morning of the Fourth of July — there and back again before most of the holiday traffic arrived. (That traffic was completely jamming all of the area roads heading the opposite direction as I returned home.)

I was a beautiful and relative quiet early morning, with low fog hugging the coast and providing a welcome contrast to the much warmer inland weather. It also was the sort of day — foggy, with bright wildflowers — that can make a Californian temporarily forget this year’s serious drought. This ranch building sits just off the main highway at the base of a couple of small valleys leading up into the coastal mountains.

The Little Sur river empties into the Pacific Ocean beneath the fog-shrouded mountains of the Big Sur coastline

It has been a very busy month or so, and since my early April trip to Death Valley, aside from a quick one-day visit to Tioga Pass on opening weekend, there has been less time for photography than I would like. I finally managed to find time to break away today, and I had enough desire to photograph that I was even willing to chance the Memorial Day traffic… along the Big Sur coast. I was up very early and on the road while most people were probably sleeping in, and as I passed Carmel and headed south it wasn’t all that crowded for such a day. However, after my first hour or two of photography, the crowds began to show up. I had decided that my plan would be to get the heck out of there before this happened, and as I turned back to the north I congratulated myself on not being in the traffic jam heading south on the coast highway. My joy was short-lived, however, and the rest of my return drive took at least twice as long as usual!

But, anything to get out for a morning along this coast! It was supposed to be warm along this section of the California coast today, and there wasn’t as much fog as usual. However, right in this area a stubborn bank of fog clung to the ridges of the Big Sur mountains, and as I drove along this section of the road the temperature dropped into the fifties and the wind blew like crazy. I almost didn’t stop at this overlook above the lagoon at the outlet of the Little Sur river, thinking that the wind might simply make it impossible to get a shot with the quality I wanted, but the beautiful curve in the green water of the lagoon, the fog bank, and the whitecaps on the deep blue Pacific convinced me to stop and give it a try.

A pond reflects trees in foggy morning light along a twisting San Joaquin Valley levee road

This photograph is from my New Year’s Day visit to the San Joaquin Valley, where I went to greet the dawn in the company of thousands of migratory birds and a couple of good friends. After arriving home from the east coast the previous night at about 11:00 and getting to bed after midnight, I arose before 4:00 AM and headed off to the valley. Despite the sleep deprivation, it helped a bit to remind myself that it was already 7:00 AM back in New York, where I had spent the previous week – but only a bit. I arrived before dawn to meet my friends Dave and Charlotte, and we quickly went to work photographing the birds and the early and misty environment of this marshland area.

Shortly after the sun rose I headed out along this road that follows the contours of the levees separating the various ponds. Mostly they travel in relatively straight lines, but here the track takes a winding course among stands of cottonwood trees. When I stopped to look around a bit I glanced back and saw this pattern, with the early light on the vegetation and the slight fog causing colors and contrast to fade into the distance.

Yosemite Autumn Foliage 2013

I have had a few final photographs of this season’s autumn color in Yosemite Valley sitting on my computer for several weeks now, waiting their place in the queue of photographs for the blog. That queue had become quite long, what with the overlap of remaining photographs from last summer, lots of other autumn color photographs, and now the onset of winter subjects such as migratory birds and so forth. Since these photos have been bumped to the back of the line too many times already, I have decided to simply share them as a group today.
