Brightly painted red, yellow, white, and black wall on the old Fabers Bicycles building in San Jose California.

The next few photographs are going to represent something a bit different from what I’ve posted recently – e.g. not natural landscape. Today my son and I went out for a two or three hour urban walk in San Jose, California, wandering through some interesting areas around the downtown area including some old neighborhoods and some very old industrial areas that were originally clustered around long gone railroad tracks. To add to the “sport,” I shot only with a 50mm prime. This photograph is a detail of a brightly painted wall on a very old bicycle shop near the downtown area. It is locally famous for its “bicycle mountain” – a huge pile of probably hundreds and hundreds of old bicycles that used to fill the small fenced yard behind the shop. I understand that the city finally made them do something about this rather interesting eyesore, and today there are still lots of old bicycle frames, forks, wheels and other detritus in the yard but it is now more or less organized on tables and hung overhead.

If you are familiar with my landscape photography and this seems a bit jarring, I think of this sort of thing as “urban landscape.” Although it may seem a bit odd to some, I approach this stuff in a way that is not all that different from how I do landscape photography.

Black and White Seals

Black and White Seals

Black and white seals resting on rocks near the shoreline at Point Lobos State Reserve.

These “guys” were resting on a rock very close to the shoreline near the Bird Rock trailhead. I had never seen a white seal before so I spent some considerable time photographing them – the combination of the lighter and darker seals was especially interesting, and the white one apparently was almost as interested in me as I was in them. It frequently gazed up to my position on the cliff.

Autumn Oaks in Rain, El Capitan Meadow

Autumn Oaks in Rain, El Capitan Meadow

Autumn Oaks in Rain, El Capitan Meadow. Yosemite Valley, California. November 1, 2008. © Copyright G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.

Brightly colored autumn oak trees in El Capitan Meadow with fog shrouded cliff face of Cathedral Rocks beyond – Yosemite Valley, California.

El Capitan Meadow, beneath the face of El Capitan and across the Valley from Cathedral Rocks (see in beyond the trees in this photo) is one of my favorite spots in the Valley. The meadow itself is beautiful in almost any season – green and lush in spring, colorful in fall, and sometimes snow covered in winter – and the backdrop formed by any of several large nearby rock faces is impressive. I shoot here every time I’m in the Valley – even last winter when I had to hike across this narrow section of the Valley in snow to get there.

In this early November photograph the trees are in full fall color and the meadow grasses and plants have gone dormant – and fog hugs the face of Cathedral Rocks in light rain.

Three ships anchored beyond old dock pilings in luminous morning light on San Francisco Bay.

I frequently ride the Caltrain up to San Francisco on summer mornings and photograph along the Embarcadero waterfront (and other locations). I have been shooting this particular scene for several years now, and I never cease to be amazed when I find such a peaceful and serene subject… standing next to old concrete barriers as commuter traffic whizzes by a few feet away.

These ships are frequently moored out in the bay a bit south of San Francisco, presumably while waiting to go into port or perhaps leave the bay? They seem to drift and turn a bit as the tides flow, so their alignment and positions can change in interesting ways. On this morning I was lucky to spot three of them lined up so nicely!
