Big waves from a distant Pacific storm pound the rugged Big Sur coast.

Two things led us to make a quick trip down to the Big Sur coast this week. First, weather reports were predicting unusually large surf, generated by a distant storm to the north in the Pacific. Second, additional pandemic lockdowns are about to be instituted here, starting on Sunday — so we felt like this might be our last opportunity to make a drive like this one for a month or more. Since we’ve spent so much of our time during the past months on our own property or, at most, within walking distance of our home, the chance to get out and look at long views was therapeutic. (It was also pretty safe, since didn’t stop for food or anything else — though passing our favorite Big Sur bakery wasn’t easy.)

This is a location I’ve photographed quite a few times in the past. These days I usually don’t stop there to photograph, though I may stop briefly just to enjoy the scene. I’ve seen it in special conditions, so there’s really no need to make another sunny day photograph there. As we approached this time, again I had no thoughts of stopping — but they I saw this backlit spray/fog thrown up by the wild surf and almost obscuring the view of the distant bridge. Believe it or not, this is a color photograph! The brilliant backlight and the mist and fog drained almost all of the color from the scene.

Although I have been down this section of California’s spectacular coast in the past few weeks, this photograph comes from a few years ago — in a very different time when many of the things causing tumult in our world were almost inconceivable. Among them, back then the idea that a pandemic might change our attitudes about traveling to such places was not even on our radar. Let’s hope that we can return to a world more like that one soon.

I think of this as a somewhat generic photograph of the Big Sur coastline — not because it isn’t a spot of great beauty, but because such places are everywhere along this part of the western edge of the continent. The sun was out on this late winter day, but storms out in the Pacific had brought impressively large waves, raising a thin layer of sea spray along the edge of the water.

Sunset Bluffs, Pacific Coast

Late-autumn sunset light on California coastal bluffs south of San Francisco.

My recollection of this photograph is that I had gone to the coast between San Francisco and Santa Cruz on this late-autumn evening partially because I had heard that people I knew were meeting up there to photograph and get together for dinner at an area restaurant. If I recall correctly, things did not go quite as planned. I think I ended up in the wrong restaurant and didn’t find these folks, and eventually I wandered off to some nearby bluffs by myself — which actually suits me fine when I’m making photographs, too.

It was a late afternoon and evening of interesting conditions, the sort that may produce something very special but which are more likely, perhaps, to be a complete bust. There was overcast and some haze in the air, and the light in afternoon was not really spectacular — it was a bit flat and the overcast made it more dull as sunset approached. However, there was the potential for something interesting. The cloud bank that stretched away from the coast seemed to terminate offshore, and there was a gap between this edge and the horizon. If that remained, I knew that there might be a brief moment of spectacular light coming through this gap just before the sud dropped below the horizon. If the band of light is narrow the colors can be intense in its beam while remaining darker and far less intense elsewhere. As you can see, that is precisely what happened.

The summer/fall seasonal boundary is not necessarily my favorite time to visit the California coast, but sometimes I get lucky! Although it may seem counter-intuitive to folks who aren’t familiar with this region, the beginning of autumn is generally the sunniest and warmest time of the year on the coast. And while that may seem like great news to people who go to the coast to visit beaches — and who want warmth! — as a photographer I prefer more “interesting” conditions: large surf, clouds, incoming and departing storms, or at least some fog!

The weather report wasn’t promising on this day — it looking like the coast would (literally) be “clear.” But since I had the morning free I headed towards the area south of Monterey anyway. The first hint that the weather reports might be wrong in a delightful way came halfway there when I entered thick inland fog that clearly had come from the coast. Monterey Bay was largely socked in, and below Carmel the fog was still reaching up into coastal hills. As I approached this familiar bay, where the Little Sur River reaches the ocean just above Point Sur, the fog was intermittently thinning and rebuilding, so I stopped in a high location and waited for the right conditions to emerge.
