An urban scene viewed through a scrim

This is intended to be a sort of playful photograph, though I think it might be read as having a bit of an ominous quality, too, depending upon how you look at it.

I made the photograph from inside the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). We are members of the museum and we go there regularly — partly to see the collection and the temporary exhibits, and partly to photograph the architecture, the people, and the urban environment surrounding the building. I made the photograph through a sort of scrim that was covering some windows, presumably to mute the outside light a bit. It was rainy, and a bit of water is running on the fabric of the scrim, and the overall effect is to mute contrast and detail in the urban scene outside the window.

A gate opens to a courtyard, Paris

This photograph was one in a series of quick snaps — street photography done while on the move, with barely time to stop and compose the image. We ended up here almost by accident. We were working our way towards a museum at which there was an exhibit of photography that seemed interesting, and our route took us through this old area.

The gate was open as we walked past, revealing an interior courtyard. It was entirely empty, except for one very well dressed man, sitting on a step near the wall and staring intently at his cell phone.

I’m going to divert briefly from the Death Vally photographs today and return to a much different place, the urban world of New York City. I made this photograph about four years ago and only rediscovered it today. Sometimes as I work my way though files after returning from such a location I get interrupted by another project and occasionally I leave work unprocessed. I think that is what happened in this case, as this wasn’t the only photograph in the batch that I had overlooked. (I only went back to these images because I was looking for something to use as an example in a reply to someone’s technical question.)

The location is Manhattan’s Chinatown, and I’m pretty sure it is a section of my favorite street in this neighborhood. (I have a kind of informal project of photographing this East Coast location and its West Coast equivalent in San Francisco.) I did something a bit unusual with my post-processing interpretation of the image. I suspect that it may not be obvious to viewers, but I played with the color levels and actually diminished their intensity quite a bit — I think this provides a little different sense of the quality of this location.

Interior lights spill into an alley between two industrial buildings

As I photographed the night industrial landscape of Mare Island Naval Ship Yard once again this past week, I revisited familiar scenes and went looking for new ones. As I worked on into the evening I gradually worked my way across a chunk of the core of the place, eventually heading south from where I began my work. I had photographed the other side of the building to the right, which contained a large open interior space which had many windows to allow me to see in and to allow light to escape into the surrounding environment. When I came around this other side of the building and looked up the alley I was surprised by the complex pattern of light spilling into the alley between the two receding buildings. I had photographed here in the past when the building to the right was abandoned, and this alley had been a very dark place.

On this evening those of us who have photographed at Mare Island for a long time — some for several decades — were noticing and lamenting some of the changes that are coming to the place. It lay almost dormant for many years, but now many of the old buildings are being refitted for modern users. On one hand this changes the lonely and forlorn character of the island. On the other hand, it means that once the buildings are rehabilitated they will likely stand for a long time. But right now construction is going on everywhere, some interesting places now are off-limits, and fences have been erected around the construction work. That posed a problem for this photograph. In the past I could walk right up this alley, but now a portable cyclone fence cuts off access. I solved the problem by extending my tripod as high as it would go — well above my head! — and photographing over the top of the fence.
