The main fall color show in the Eastern Sierra Nevada (and in other higher portions of the range) comes from the October aspen color. But this most certainly is not the only Sierra Nevada Fall color. I always mark the start of the color season by the corn lilies taking on yellow and brown hues, and not long after that the bilberry plants turn areas (often around lakes) deep red in just the right light. Willows are some of the first plants to get real yellow leaves. Grasses begin to transition from green to yellow to brown.

Most of the autumn colors in this photograph are a bit more subtle than the brilliant aspen leaves. The beds of grass are well along on that transition from green through yellow to tan and brown. A few small plants along the base of the rocks are showing yellow. And beyond that, the overall sense is that of a scene of end-of-season quiet and stillness. There were fewer people than usual up in this area due to fires and the pandemic, and as I continued photographing into the dusk hours I was almost the only person left here when I arrived, and by the time I finished I had the silence of this scene to myself.

In another post that I queued up recently I mentioned some aspects of the experience of photographing migratory birds, pointing out that a lot of “down time” is part of the experience — times when there isn’t a lot of action going on. The birds may be static — or missing! — and one waits. In that other post I point out that these slow times are certainly not a bad thing! The quiet stillness can grow on you eventually, and there are other things to see and photograph, too.

I’m not at all a “pure bird photographer.” When I’m in the field photographing this subject I spend a good portion of my time thinking as a landscape photographer. Even when the primary subject is a bird or birds, I often consider how that bird is part of the landscape. But I also frequently switch gears entirely and focus on the space in which the birds live… and I photograph landscapes. On this occasion I was working a wetland area and the reflections of plants in the water caught my attention.

We know that coyotes are about in the locations where we photograph migratory birds in the autumn and winter. We often hear their cries in the evening, and occasionally we’ll catch sight of them in the distance as they trot across the grassland toward a tasty-looking flock of birds, no doubt encountering equally tasting small mammals along the way. However, seeing one this close in the daytime is a bit less typical.

It was the last hour before sunset, as you might guess from the warm and low-angle light, when this specimen appeared not far away from my position. It was most certainly aware of my presence, but it didn’t seem overly concerned as it passed, pausing occasionally to look around and even cast a glance in our direction.

Late-autumn colors in California Central Valley wetlands.

As I continue my pandemic project of reviewing years of raw files — and discovering and rediscovering all sorts of interesting things — I have now arrived at the very end of 2012. I’m currently working on the final week or so of autumn and about to move into winter and then on to 2013. One silver lining behind the dark coronavirus cloud is that I have had the time and inclination to revisit these old images and relive some of the experiences I had as I made them.

Every fall migratory birds return to overwinter in California’s Central Valley. Starting in about November I turn my attention that way and start to anticipate visits to this landscape — one that I don’t tend to photograph during the warmer months of the year. But in the cooler and wetter seasons, when the birds can be abundant, this part of California calls to me. I made this photograph on a cold and foggy late-autumn morning as the tule fog was beginning to thin, casting soft light on the autumn foliage of the scattered trees.
