When photographing sand dunes I spend a lot of time looking for just the right combination of shading, texture, line, curve, and color. But in the end, it mostly comes down to the light — the light that colors the sand, creates the shading, and illuminates those lines and curves. It seems like every photograph in the sand dunes is an ephemeral, one-time thing, and the particular combinations of conditions can never be precisely replicated. Unlike subjects where the primary elements of the scene don’t change much, each visit to the dunes takes me to different places and photographs.

On a late-March trip to Death Valley National Park, I revisited a location that I had photographed with great success a couple of months ago. This time Patty accompanied me, and I wanted her to experience the light that I had worked with on the earlier visit. That did not happen. Two months ago the evening sky was clear, and warm-colored sunset light illuminated the western-facing dunes. This time the sky was filled with clouds and the light was soft and the colors far less intense, producing an entirely different and subtle experience.

Try as I may, I cannot pass this spot without at least a brief stop. The hill (a future sea stack?) sits at the terminus of the Little Sur River, where it takes a meandering route across the beach before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Backed by the rugged cliffs of the Big Sur coast, it is a remarkable little scene, especially on a day like this when I found myself at the edge of the fog bank, and light came and went as the fog oscillated back and forth. Beams of light traversed the face of the distant faces and raced across the beach.

If you follow my posts you know that I live close enough to the Pacific Coast to go there and photograph for the morning, and that I’ve been going there for decades. The coast is as beautiful as always, especially when I arrive early enough to beat the tourist traffic, but it is showing some rough edges these days. The extent of recent wildfires is concerning, and areas still suffer from washouts that occurred during flooding. Given that last fact, it is ironic that drought is also affecting the landscape, and places that should be in the middle of their intensely green spring growth are already turning brown.

Coming across this little line of snow geese was good fortune. One thing is clear when photographing wildlife, and even more clear when photographing birds: the photographer has little control over the scene and must make the best of what turns up. (OK, there are ways to improve your chances, but geese are notoriously bad at taking stage directions.) It isn’t unusual to find small groups of geese, but finding a group lined up this was was serendipitous.

This is one of the photographs that I think of as “birdscapes” — while they are wildlife photographs, they are more about the place of the wildlife in their surroundings. A closer look shows that there’s a lot more here than the geese. Just beyond the edge of the water there is a row of sandhill cranes, whose darker colors make them a bit harder to see at first. There are trees on the horizon, but also indicators of this being agricultural country and not at all “wilderness,” In the far distance geese fill the sky, and the bands of clouds beyond them are above the faint outline of the crest of the Sierra Nevada.

My recollection of this evening is that I arrived barely in time for late-day photography. I had been photographing elsewhere and calculating my schedule carefully. My plan was to arrive just in time to walk out to an area I had scoped out before, arriving at my destination perhaps a half hour before the sun dropped behind a western mountain range. I would first shoot straight into the setting sun, using its rim light to accentuate the forms of the dunes.

My plan mostly worked, though it took a bit longer to hike to the spot than I expected. By the time I arrived I had less than that anticipated half hour to work in the last direct sunlight, but I set to work and did get some other photographs that I like. Then, as happens in places like this, the mountain shadow moved quickly across my position and the light went from warm-toned and intense to soft and increasingly blue. I turned 180 degrees and photographed this evening cloud above the last direct light on peaks along the east side of Death Valley.
