Late-season color surrounds a subalpine lake beneath talus fields and cliff

This lake was just “up the block” from our campsite in the Sierra backcountry this past September. We were there in roughly the third week of the month, base-camped near a lake from which we could explore large areas of the surrounding territory. These surroundings were filled with an abundance of small lake, forest, and plenty of rocky scenery, from talus fields to high peaks.

On several evenings I wandered up the path from our campsite in order to get to nearby lakes that lay at a somewhat higher elevation. These lakes were still surrounded by trees, albeit increasingly small trees and often with space between them. This lake had a lovely growth of tall grasses along its inlet stream, and here I have photographed it against the background of a huge cliff that was nearby.

I went back and forth on the question of whether this photograph should be black and white or color. When I made the photograph, in light snow flurries and soft and low light, there was hardly any color in the scene, and I imagined the “I might as well” go with monochrome. I toyed with the idea of doing a color rendition and leaving the viewer to figure out if it really was in color or not. Finally, I simply decided that color wasn’t a particularly important aspect of the image… and here you are.

The scene might be just a bit deceiving. It is clearly a winter-like scene (though photographed in early spring) with new fallen snow. However, a closer look reveals that the snow is quite light — perhaps no more than an inch or so — yet it is fresh enough to cling to branches and cover the ground. It was snowing lightly as I made the photograph, in fact.

Wind and blowing dust on sand dunes can produce an otherworldly and spectacular scene. They are also very difficult to work in — tough on equipment and tough on photographers! (I recently read some advice about entering the dunes during serious sand storms. Basically, the recommendation was, “don’t.” For the stubborn, who would do it anyway, the text continued with a recommendation to wear protective clothing, eye protection, and some kind of mask — perhaps towels soaked in water. Fun, eh?) The conditions on this occasion were not really that bad, probably not even as challenging as they might appear to be in the photograph, but it was an afternoon of blowing wind and sand.

We were in a section of low dunes, a distance away from the popular areas where the challenge seems to be to surmount the highest dune. In these lower areas there is plenty to see and photograph, and I usually prefer them to the less accessible and higher areas. Here there are plenty of plants growing in the same, and the more intimate landscape of hills and valleys provides endless subjects. As I was working that terrain I happened to look west toward the late day sun — barely out of the frame — to see the complex patters leading away on the closer dunes, the dark shape of the more distant tall dune, and the light shining through the wind-blown sand in the distance.

What can I say? I love back-light! The more difficult the light, the more I like it. Often I shoot almost directly into the sun when it is low in the sky, especially when there is some haze that makes the atmosphere appear to glow. (I’ve become adept at shading the lens from the direct light — using my hand, my hat, or anything else handy to try to prevent lens flare and reduce the hazy quality that comes when this light is directly on the lens.) The kind of light I’m looking for is the sort that is too bright to look at.

We arrived at this location late in the day, as per my plan. I know it well enough to recognize that the light can become quite interesting just before the sun drops behind mountains to the west. For a short time the light slants across the landscape, almost parallel to the slope of the land as it drops to the east. This produces that glow I mentioned, it accentuates the atmospheric recession effect, and the leaves of trees can glow with the light coming from behind. For this photograph I found a spot where lines of colorful aspens crossed the frame from bottom to about half way up, and then ridges continued the pattern until the final pattern with its row of conifer trees.
