Just a Cloud
“Just a Cloud” — Sunset clouds over Death Valley, February 2025.

I spotted this cloud at the end of a very long day that began in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was on the road before sunrise, heading for Death Valley National Park. I crossed the Diablo Range, continued south on Interstate 5, then crossed the Great Central Valley through Bakersfield to climb Tehachapi Pass. From there I dropped into high desert, took route 14 north along the “baby Sierra,” then followed backroads up past Trona, eventually entering the park and crossing Towne Pass. It was after 3:00 when I finally got a campsite and started setting up.

Once I had established my camp, it was time for photography. On one hand I was excited to get started. On the other hand, after that long day it would have been easier to just enjoy a quiet evening in camp. But off I went, to an elevated position from which I could photograph sunset light on desert mountains. After the light left those peaks, it still produced some color on a few dissipating lenticular clouds high above the Panamint Mountains.

Free ‘P’ Star

“Free ‘P’ Star” — Free ‘P’ Star, a Paris thrift store, with orange and black paint and lots of street art.

This was one of those street photography “grab shots” — I think it was in Le Marais —that I make while walking about in the urban environment. I often make them almost spontaneously — thinking in the moment that the subject is interesting visually, but then not taking time to note the precise location or other facts. To be honest, in a lot of ways this is the opposite of how I work in my landscape photography, and that may be part of the appeal.

From more recent internet research, it appears that “Free ‘P” Star” may be a chain of what we in the US call “thrift stores” or “second hand shops.” There were lots of things in this scene that attracted me: the string contrast between black an orange, the glow of the purple light inside the store, and the impressive collection of street art on the outside wall.

“Street Art, Zaragoza’ – A fanciful female face, street art, Zaragoza, Spain.

I may be misconstruing things that I do not understand, but it seems like some places in Europe tolerate graffiti and/or street art more than in the USA, and perhaps that some of it is a bit more sophisticated than the “tagging” that we see so often here. (Indeed, there is tagging in Europe — even in this image — and there is some fascinating street art in America, too.)

I photographed this detail of a wall in Zaragoza, Spain. I don’t know the cultural reference of the figure, if there is one, but the image caught my attention. I get a kick out of how it is positioned as if the vertical pipe is almost irrelevant — yet the pipe covering that eye does affect how we regard the face.

Wetlands Sunrise

“Wetlands Sunrise” — Morning sun rising thruogh tule fog and reflected in Central Valley wetlands.

Bird photography is my excuse for going to this place in the winter months, but this winter landscape is the main attraction. I love what happens here during the spells of thick tule fog, when the landscape is obscured and the light becomes soft and mysterious. Here the rising sun colors the sky above the fog, which in turn makes the fog glow luminously.

To look at this scene, you might imagine that it is warm — at least the colors are! But it was a typically cold morning, likely in the thirties, with damp fog making it feel even colder. The fog had been thicker before the sun came up, but when I made the photograph it was beginning to thin. (If you look closely you may spot a few migratory birds just above the rising sun.)
