Usually my photographs are, at least to my mind, more about how I see something than about the thing I saw — though there is always a bit of tension between those two things. This one is more about “the thing” itself. If you look closely there is a series of three lakes or ponds in this improbable location, far out on the fringes of one of the hottest and driest places in North America. This spot has a history involving mining, the transportation of goods, and some nearby springs. But the amazement of finding water in such a place is shared with all such locations.

I’ve long felt that desert landscapes are among the best places to see the effects of water. Along a stream fed by mountain snowpack, water is a given. Out here it is rare, and you have to look around to see the many signs of its work. A playa? Formed by water. A gigantic fan spreading out from a desert mountain valley? Water. Undulating terrain under the roadway? Water. A small but striking strip of green? Water. The rugged forms of badlands? Water. The effects are literally everywhere you look.

Evening light comes to a remote alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada backcountry.

I made this photograph from more or less our campsite on a backpacking trip to this remote area of the upper Kern River drainage in the southern Sierra Nevada back in 2010. It was a trip that combined the familiar and the new, that took me to a spot that I had first thought of visiting decades before, and which provided some surprises. The first few days of the trip covered familiar ground over a couple of high passes and dropped us into the upper Kern on the John Muir Trail. At this point we left the JMT and followed less traveled routes for the remainder of our visit.

Our first departure from the JMT was to head south of northwest into the upper Kern’s more remote areas. We were not so far out on the fringe that there were no trails, but the trails were clearly not well used and we saw very few people. The area is not easy to get to nor is it really on the route between other major points, so those that go there pretty much just go there. Eventually we worked our way over towards the foot of the Great Western Divide, to an area full of intimate meadow/rock landscapes and small lakes. Here we found a beautiful campsite that gave no hints that it had been occupied before. I’m sure it had been, but it is unusual to find such a place in the Sierra that is visited so infrequently that there are not obvious signs of the previous visitors. We set up camp, engaged in warfare with marauding mosquitos, wandered about a bit, and settled in to watch the day come to an end.

Our original goal on this late-July, early-August southern Sierra backpacking trip was to be Lake South America, a very high, very barren, and very remote lake in the upper reaches of the Kern River basin in Sequoia National Park. Believe it or not, I’ve thought of visiting this lake for decades, ever since a very early pack trip on which I planned to go there but ended up bypassing the lake and exiting in Mineral King. (Mineral King is nowhere near Lake South America. It is a long story… :-)

After staying on the JMT at Tyndall Creek the night before, we headed up over the ridge to the northwest in the morning. After walking up a broad and mosquito infested marshy valley, we climbed the steep headwall at the upper end of this valley and looked down at a lake on the other side. Just beyond this lake was Lake South America. Oddly, when we arrived we were not tremendously excited by the scene. Yes, it is a wild and high place in the heart of the Sierra, but for some reason it seemed a bit like many other high, barren lakes we had visited before… and we decided to make only a very brief visit and then move on.

This turned out to be a great decision. After returning to the lake that we had passed just prior to the short side trip to Lake South America, we picked up a trail heading towards the head waters of the Kern and eventually dropped down to a set of about four beautiful lakes just below treeline. The lakes, unnamed as far as I can tell, seem to sit at the edge of a valley with the high and jagged peaks of the Great Western Divide just beyond, providing one of the most rugged and spectacular scenes I’ve encountered in the Sierra. Needless to say, we decided to camp here despite the mosquito hatch that was currently underway.

This photograph probably belongs in the “trying to turn lemons into lemonade” file. I’ve had wonderful luck with great light on all of my previous visits to the remote Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, the site of the “moving rocks” that have left tracks in their wake across the playa surface. However, my string luck seemed to run out on this late March visit. Earlier in the day as I contemplated whether or not to head out there I noticed some budding lenticular clouds to the north and made the decision to go. My preference is to have some clouds at the Racetrack, as perfectly clear sky isn’t as interesting in my view. Plus I always have in mind a particular previous visit when I photographed the playa at dawn with beautiful lenticulars building over the mountains to the north of the playa, and I think I’m always hoping for similar conditions again.

The plan on this visit was to arrive in the mid-afternoon to shoot the Grandstand, a formation near where the road first arrives at the playa, and to then photograph the beautiful evening light, the full moon (in the evening and then again before dawn) and finally the dawn light. The conditions continued to look great as I did the long washboard drive to the playa, and I arrived and photographed the Grandstand as planned. However, as I finished up here a high band of clouds moved across the sky and flattened out the light. As evening came on I was out on the playa, but the clouds remained and the light was not remarkable. I finally wandered back off the playa after dark, hoping that the clouds would clear and allow full moon photography. This never happened, and when I returned to the playa early in the morning the overcast was still present, with only a thin area of blue sky far to the west.

But I photographed anyway. Softer, overcast light has its potential, and since I was there I was certainly not going to waste the opportunity. In the end, I wasn’t thrilled with what I brought back for the most part, though I do like the effect of the overcast and the softer light on this black and white photograph of one of the more recognizable rocks. (By the way, the rest of my Death Valley visit went much better than this one night!)
