Rocks and their reflections in the still water of an early season meltwater tarn in the high elevation forest along Tioga Pass Road, Yosemite National Park.

I’ve driven past this small seasonal pond alongside Tioga Pass Road many times, and I’ve stopped on occasion. It tends to be a tough subject for me. Either I’m there at the wrong time of day or later in the season when the pond completely dries up. However, the interesting rocks and boulders set in the tarn and the background forest keep drawing me back, and I always cast a glance at it as I drive this road.

It was midday when I passed by on this early June day. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a group of deer at the far side of the pond, feeding on new grasses against the background of the forest. It took me a moment to find a place to pull over and park, attach my longest lens, put the whole mess on the tripod, grab my pack, and walk back to the tarn. I managed to get everything set up and a nice composition including the deer set up… when they left. Ah, well! I decided to stick around a bit and see what else I could find even though it was midday and the light was somewhat tough.

Yes, one more in the series – perhaps the final one, but we’ll see. I suppose it could be titled, “It ain’t over until it’s over.” After the astonishing colors of the brightest moments of the sunset fade, one might think that the show is over – but frequently it isn’t over yet.

I remember the time I first learned that when shooting evening scenes like this one should never leave until it is too dark to photograph any more! This “lesson” happened a bit further west in Tuolumne Meadows some years ago. I was photographing in the evening, shooting across the transitory early-season lake that forms there in wet years. Another photographer was nearby shooting the same beautiful evening, and I remember him remarking that some of his favorite photographs actually came after the intense light of sunset and during the time when the light almost begins to feel more like night than day. Two wonderful things can happen at this hour. First, you can still get some very unexpected color surprises even after the show seems to be over. (I learned this a second time a few years later after packing up at the summit of Lembert Dome and heading down – only to be surprised by a wonderful and completely unexpected suffusion of beautiful light, and having to quickly unpack and squeeze off a couple shots.) Second, as astonishing as the brilliant colors are that precede this darker time, this is the hour for some very wonderful deep and subtle colors that you just won’t see at any other time of day.

The water was extremely smooth on this somewhat hazy morning along the Embarcadero near the San Francisco Giants’ ATT Park.

(A note: It was something of a pleasant surprise when this photo emerged on the home page from the queue this morning. So much has happened in the last month or so – daughter’s wedding, moving a son from Seattle to the SF Bay Area, conclusion of another school year, etc. – that the day I made this photo seems like it might have been a year ago!)
