Oban Sunset

Oban Sunset
“Oban Sunset” — Shortly before the summer solstice, clouds pass as the sun sets over the waters near Oban, Scotland.

Our brief visit to Oban, Scotland this summer felt a bit like a dream. In part that might have been jet lag — this was the first place we visited after landing, with a plan to spend a few days adjusting to the time difference. Perhaps the Oban Distillery and the ever-present Scotch whisky played a part? And the days were so long here at this northerly latitude, where sunset came at close to 10:00pm during the last half of May.

We stayed in a waterfront B&B. Our room had a large bay window looking out over the… bay. If I recall correctly, we had returned to our room from dinner when this beautiful evening sky developed. I grabbed my camera and quickly walked northwest along the shoreline to find a good vantage point to watch the show and make this photograph.

Evening light near Hurricane Ridge and over the Strait of Juan de Fuca

After shooting in the lowland rainforest earlier in the day, we planned to head up to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park in the evening, hoping for some interesting late day light. I’ve been “skunked” (frustrated by poor conditions!) on more than one occasion here, including one notable visit when the clouds reduced visibility to a distance that might have been measured in yards. An earlier web cam check and what we could now see from down below encouraged us to think that we might get something better this time, so into the park and up the road we went.

When we arrived the conditions were not quite stupendous, but they held the promise of becoming better, so we stuck around and photographed. Although it was mostly somewhat hazy and cloudy, every so often the sun would come through an opening in the clouds to the west, and the beams of light would move across the rugged landscape of the Olympic Mountains spread out in front of us – and on one occasion this light crossed through rain showers and produced a momentary rainbow. As things wound down – without there ever having been a real climactic moment of light – I decided to walk over to a low ridge from which there was a view to the north and the Strait of Juan De Fuca, with Canadian territory beyond. Again, the atmosphere was murky, though there were potentially interesting clouds about. I made this photograph near the very end of the day when a bit of filtered though direct light swept across the foreground ridge.

Richardson Bay and Morning Haze

Richardson Bay and morning haze over San Francisco Bay, California.

On a late October morning – usually the most fog-free time of year in the San Francisco area – I began my day photographing the San Francisco skyline from Treasure Island at dawn before heading north over the Golden Gate towards Muir Woods National Monument. Is I approached the high point on the ridge section of the road to the park, I saw this brightly backlit haze over Richardson Bay, Tiburon Peninsula, and the San Francisco Bay and East Bay Hills beyond. Richardson Bay, in the foreground, is the body of water next to Sausalito from which the view is sometimes clear across the Golden Gate to San Francisco.
