Open Door and Stairway, Night

Open Door and Stairway, Night
“Open Door and Stairway, Night” — The entrance to someone’s Chinatown home, San Francisco.

Originally I contemplated adding this to the “Postcards From Pandemic” series — the mood and subject seem about right. In the end I did not, since I’ve decided that those photographs will all be made during the lock-down and whatever follows. This photograph is almost five years old.

There is, for me, a lot to ponder in this photograph. Let’s start with the obvious — it is not a pretty picture. Despite the fact that the scene is so gritty, I was attracted by the colors, textures, and all that stuff, apart from the underlying reality of the scene. But, obviously, we have to ask some questions about a scene like this: Who lives here? What must it be like to enter your home through such a portal?

People walking at night in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna.

Two summers ago we took a long tour through a bunch of European cities, traveling on our own and spending at least four days at each stop. This gave us time (though there is never really enough of it) to wander and poke around these places. One of our stops was Vienna, where we had not been before. I knew things about Vienna, but I didn’t really get its culture until we got off the train, caught a taxi, and drove past the remarkable architecture of the place. We stayed not far from this location at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which gave me the opportunity to grab my camera and go out to photograph in the street at night.

This is, of course, a busy part of Vienna — full of shops, all kinds of obvious tourist attractions, restaurants and so on. While I sometimes can be a bit annoyed by dense crowed (though, at other times, energized by them), right now I’d give anything to share these streets with a few thousand other people on a summer evening.

A bench, a wall, a warning sign, and a door in sunlight.

Photography is perhaps low on the list of the world’s priorities during a pandemic, when millions are infected and tens of thousands have died so far. But the world doesn’t stop for this, and we go on doing what we do as best we can — there is really no other choice, in my view.

My ability to make photographs of the subjects I would normally focus on right now has been extremely limited since I cannot travel more than a few miles and mostly on foot. So I have been using this as an opportunity to review my archives of old images, many of which might otherwise have been permanently left behind. But I’ve also pondered how in the world to photograph this event and its effects. I’m finally starting to see some general outlines of how this might be possible. We’ll see where this leads. Stay tuned.

Marbled Canyon Wall

Marbled stone in a Death Valley canyon wall.

This little section of canyon wall is one that I’ve marveled (marbled?) at for years, stopping there every time I visit this canyon and pondering how to photograph it. Although I find the patterns (and what they imply about the geology of this place) to be remarkable, it isn’t each to find a way to photograph them the way I want. On this visit the canyon was quite dark and the light filtering down from above was soft and blue-toned.

I am about as far from being a trained geologist as one can be. I have never taken a single course in the subject, though I have read a bit. Nonetheless, I always marvel at the record of time and geological forces that created a little spot like this. Some material was, I presume, laid down “here” over a long period of time. Additional time allowed for it to transform into rock. As geological forces on various scales did their work, cracks appeared that permitted the entrance of entirely different material to create what we see as veins — but which are perhaps better thought of as layers. Eventually the force of water (and perhaps a weakness in the structure of the rock?) exposed this rock to the light. And then I arrived to photograph it…
