Forest and Loch

Forest and Loch
“Forest and Loch” — Forest scene above Loch Lochy on the Great Glen Way, Scotland.

Scotland’s Great Glen Way runs between Fort William in the south and Inverness in the north, roughly following the route of the Caledonian Canal connecting a series of “lochs,” or long lakes. To generalize, the route takes walkers (and some cyclists) through several kinds of terrain — along the shoreline of the lochs, on level paths next to the canal, past agricultural areas, through hillside forests, and occasionally to the highlands country. Almost everywhere, with the partial exception of the highlands, everything is green… as in this photograph of a hillside forest, one of the lochs, and distant mountains.

The body of water is Loch Lochy, one of the three lochs on the route. (The others are the smaller Loch Oich and the huge Loch Ness.) There would normally a route closer to its shoreline, but trail work took us up into the mountains on this day, and through many forested sections like this one. The Scottish forests are dense and very green, but they are also managed for forestry. It isn’t unusual to be walking through thick woods and suddenly come upon heavy logging equipment and hillsides denuded of trees. The foreground in this picture is one such area after some years of regrowth.

Oban Sunset

Oban Sunset
“Oban Sunset” — Shortly before the summer solstice, clouds pass as the sun sets over the waters near Oban, Scotland.

Our brief visit to Oban, Scotland this summer felt a bit like a dream. In part that might have been jet lag — this was the first place we visited after landing, with a plan to spend a few days adjusting to the time difference. Perhaps the Oban Distillery and the ever-present Scotch whisky played a part? And the days were so long here at this northerly latitude, where sunset came at close to 10:00pm during the last half of May.

We stayed in a waterfront B&B. Our room had a large bay window looking out over the… bay. If I recall correctly, we had returned to our room from dinner when this beautiful evening sky developed. I grabbed my camera and quickly walked northwest along the shoreline to find a good vantage point to watch the show and make this photograph.

Sailboats, Oban

Sailboats, Oban
“Sailboats, Oban” — Sailboats on the water at Oban, Scotland.

Oban is a lovely Scottish town — a picturesque spot on the waterfront, with hills and islands all around, fine seafood, good people… and the Oban Whisky Distillery! (Yes, we did the tour, and we bought a bottle as soon as we got back to the states.) There is almost constant boat traffic in the bay in front of the town as fishing boats, small tour boats, sailboats, and ferries come and go.

I made this photograph from McCaig’s Tower, the very old stone structure that sits on a hilltop above the town and offers a remarkable panorama of the surrounding landscape. Shortly after we arrived at the top of the hill a large group of sailboats crossed the bay in front of us, stretching out in a line against the darker land and water.

Ferry Terminal, Oban

Ferry Terminal, Oban
“Ferry Terminal, Oban” — Ferry terminal, waterfront, and the town of Oban, Scotland.

The Scottish town of Oban has many attractions. It is a nice contrast to larger cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh — it is small, walkable, and charming. It sits right on the waterfront, and it is a center of marine traffic, with fishing boats, personal watercraft, and ferries heading to island locations. And being so close to the water, it is a fine place to find great seafood.

We spent a couple of days there in mid-May when the press of tourists wasn’t yet that great, and the weather was warming up. (Despite the overcast sky in this photograph, it was actually warm, and some of the natives gratefully suggested that perhaps we had brought our California weather along.) The ferry dock is at the lower left in this scene, with homes on the hillside beyond.
