Smoky conditions, a bit to my surprise, produced some really lovely light o this autumn day. I arrived in The Valley on a fall morning to find that managed fires were filling the air with smoke. After driving four hours to get there, starting way before sunrise, I cannot say that I was happy to arrive to this! However, after a moment I remembered that smoke has the potential to produce some lovely effects. I headed toward this meadow, attracted by its large black oak trees and the potential for backlight.

The smoke thinned a bit, but there was just enough left in the air to glow when the sun hit it, including the beam of light in this photograph that came through a gap in the upper canyon walls of Yosemite Valley. With that haze and the backlight the trees really glowed.

This photograph comes from my short trip to the area near Tioga Pass in Yosemite during the final days of summer — a trip to reacquaint myself with the Sierra after missing the entire summer up there. I camped near the crest where I could easily enter the park or head east and visit the eastern escarpment of the range and some of the nearby high desert terrain.

I made this photograph on a morning when I headed east, passing Mono Lake and continuing a bit further, then turning off the main road to drive along the edge of a huge ponderosa pine forest. At some point in the past a wildfire burned though here, and the skeletal burned trees have long fascinated me. These trees are right at the (former) edge of the grove, and Mono Lake and desert mountains are barely visible in the distance.

A Yosemite National Park forest beginning its post-wildfire recovery..

This photograph comes from Yosemite National Park, and not far from the current wildfire in the Mariposa Grove area. There are “good fires” and “bad fires” — the former tend to burn loose stuff on the forest floor along with some small trees and other plants, while the later burn hot and climb into the crowns of the trees and often killing them. Most of the trees in a healthy forest will survive the good fires, but increasingly the forests are now faced with bad fires that cause tremendous destruction. A quick scan around this photograph reveals some dead young trees but also some remaining green branches that likely mark a tree that is going to survive.

Photographing wildfire sites has long been a challenge for me. Many years ago I simply regarded wildfires as evil, but today my view is more nuanced, and I accept that some fire occurs in healthy forests and, in fact, is necessary and good. The challenge photographically has been to see these scenes as being subjects for beautiful photography rather than just as destruction.

Fire water? Water and Fire? Smoke and Water? Hard to say. A group of use were in the Yosemite backcountry for a week, and after spending the first few days photographing around a quiet lake we moved to another location. Our partially cross-country route took us along an outlet stream that gradually steepened and eventually left us to work our way down an exposed expanse of open granite to the river below. Before out descent we saw a thin column of smoke far to our south, but soon after we arrived at the river the sky filled with smoke, the sun was almost blotted out, and ash began to fall.

Clearly we were downwind of a serious wildfire, but because we were deep in a canyon we had little idea of where it might be. It was a deeply unsettling experience to hike along the river in this mud-colored light with ash falling like light snow. Eventually we neared our destination and, as photographers inevitably do, we turned our attention to considering how to make photographs in and of these conditions. This photograph is a bit of the surface of a river, with reflections including weak sky, the brown of the smoke cloud, and dark areas reflecting surrounding canyon walls and vegetation.
