A solitary tree caught in a beam of sunset light beneath El Capitan

As a friend recently wrote, lots of photography stories begin with a recounting of how bad the light was and end with an unexpected miracle of light. I’m not sure that this event qualifies as a miracle, but it certainly was unexpected. After a day of photographing in Yosemite Valley I was more or less ready to take a break and clouds were closing in, so I decided I might as well head to Tunnel View and just take a look. I had no plan to photograph. I arrived and parked, got out of my vehicle, and walked to the overlook unburdened by any photographic equipment at all. Clouds were thickening above the Valley and it looked like a predicted weather front was probably approaching from the west, meaning that more clouds would be blocking the light from the west. I decided to go back to my car to get my smart phone so that I could walk back and make a “Hi, I’m here!” photo to send to my family.

As I returned, I saw a beam of light start to illuminate the opposite valley wall to the west-northwest, and I quickly figured out that it was gradually angling toward the base of El Capitan. There are no guarantees of how such an event will unfold, but it is better to be prepared and end up disappointed than to not be ready and miss photographing something glorious. So I dashed back to the car again, grabbed camera gear, rushed back, and set up. By now the narrow beam of light was traversing the valley wall almost all the way to the base of El Capitan, and for a brief moment it caught this solitary tree in its spotlight as another band of golden hour light washed across the upper face and lit the edge of the monolith.

Clouds reflected on the still surface of Mono Lake

Mono Lake has many moods. For example, as I post this, it is a quiet and lonely place where snow covers the mountains to the west, fog may fill in for days, and few people visit. In summer it can be very hot and often quite windy, with blowing dust and waves on the lakes surface. At dawn the light can be subtly colorful; at midday it may be intense and flat.

I made this photograph on a day just before the start of autumn, when the lake’s surface was unusually calm, to the point of almost justifying the description “glass-like.” I went to a place that is not visited as frequently as some of the more accessible and iconic locations, and from here I was able to photograph right at the water’s edge, a vantage point from which I was able to include a few isolated clouds floating past plus their reflections in the still surface of the water. At times like this, the strongest impressions of the Mono Lake Basin for me are of great distances, the immense sky, still water, and deep silence.

Tufa formations, the vast expanse of Mono Lake, and smoke covered desert mountains

This nowhere near the first time I have photographed from this location, though it is the first time I have worked with conditions like these. Quite a bit earlier this morning I began to photograph before dawn, quickly realizing that the thickening smoke from a nearby wildfire was blanketing Mono Basin and creating atmospheric effects ranging from very dark sky, to clouds illuminated from behind, to drifting layers. After photographing near the lake I headed to a higher elevation area to the north, photographed there, and then headed back down toward Mono Lake.

As I descended I soon began to enter the fringes of the drifting smoke clouds. Lit from behind, the clouds glowed from within and softened the edges of elements of the landscape. Coming past this spot along the edge of the lake I noticed that some tufa structures formed a near semicircle near the shore, giving a bit of definition to a scene that was otherwise quite soft.

Wildfire smoke layer drift, above Mono Lake at sunrise

The subject of this photograph comes about as close to being insubstantial as possible. When I began photographing before dawn on this September morning, Mono Lake was still mostly visible, though a large cloud of wildfire smoke was gathering to the southeast and beginning to drift toward the lake. First, layers of smoke began to stretch individually across the lake as sunrise approached. As more of them arrived they began to completely obscure the more distant landscape and to mute the colors and details of objects that were even closer. If you look at this photograph for a moment you can begin to see what remains — a bit of a peninsula with some tufa formations along the right margin, and in the lower center and stretching toward the left some soft reflections of morning light on the surface of the lake.

For a moment when I first saw the smoke I was disappointed that it might interfere with my photography, but it only took a moment to realize that these were special and beautiful conditions not likely to occur that often. The smoke and the morning backlight rendered details almost invisible, only seen faintly through gaps in the smoke. The smoke itself, dividing into layers and taking on subtle colors from the morning back-light, filled the scene with nearly abstract shapes. But before long smoke filled in even more, and soon it was too opaque to photograph at all.
