This photograph takes me back to early June, when we spent a few days photographing in far Northern California’s coast redwood country, mostly in the famous national and state redwood parks up there. The timing of visits to the redwoods always seems a bit tricky, and in my experience it seems that the dates for important things like the arrival of the rhododendron bloom can be pretty variable. On this trip we want back on more or less the same dates as our previous visit, but this time we saw far fewer rhododendron blooms. Of course, with the disrupted climate and drought in California, things seem to be off schedule generally.

I am somewhat notorious for being unable to encounter fog in this area, at least in the redwood forest. I regularly see foggy redwood forest photographs by others, but when I go the fog seems to flee the scene! On this morning there actually was a bit of fog though. A few minutes early some stray fog clouds had passed through the trees, and when I made this photograph higher clouds muted the light quite nicely. The lighter plant in the foreground is a tree-like rhododendron… with almost no flowers!

Morning light on Mendocino Bay and rocky coastal bluffs.

Mendocino still seems to have some of the feeling of the California coast from some decades ago. When I was quite young my family used to visit Carmel, and back then it seemed like a very different and more intimate place than the touristy mob scene that it has become now. While Mendocino is most certainly a place that attracts and relies on the tourist trade, it still feels more like a real place than something contrived. It is small. There aren’t that many restaurants. Most of the lodgings are relatively unobtrusive.

It also is just about as close to the ocean as you can get in such a town along this part of the coast. To make this photograph I got out of bed, got dressed, (likely paused for coffee), headed out the door, and walked about five minutes to the edge of the coastal bluffs. There was hardly anyone else there — perhaps they were busy enjoying brunch still. The photograph looks along the edge of Mendocino Bay, back toward the outlet of the Big River.

An abandoned building at the location of a future high tech center, San Jose, California.

You might have to look a bit past the superficial visual constituents of this image to see the world headquarters, but something close to that is coming to this location. Far enough from where I live that it is a very long walk, a major “tech giant” is beginning a long-term project to create a major urban campus. At this point about all one sees is a whole lot of empty lots and abandoned buildings, structures from a much earlier period in the history of this city — homes, small businesses, warehouses, and more. The plan is that a decade from now this will be some sort of ultra-modern, thriving technology center with access to transit and more. We’ll see.

For now though it can be a bit of a photographic playground if your interest includes old, abandoned places and things. I did not investigate closely enough to know what actually went on in this building, but it has the appearance of a small shop or light industrial facility — perhaps automobile repair, some kind of fabrication, or similar. Beyond these associations with an earlier time in this region, it also has the appeal of a nicely weathered look, and some interesting paint colors. On this day the light also proved interesting. In fact, if you look at this the right way, there are — or at least it seems to me — two structures on the scene. One comes from the square angles of the building itself and the other comes from the oblique and curving lines of light and shadow.

A dense grove of closely-spaced coast redwood trees, Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

This dense “wall”of redwood trees is part of a grove at Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California. Our experience of arriving in the grove was quite striking. We had just spent hours driving a long loop of small country roads out to part of the “Lost Coast” area, and after a somewhat steep descent the road dropped into this deep, dark, and quiet grove. We stepped out of the car into the cathedral-like experience of these incredibly large trees and paused here on our drive for some time, wandering slowly among the trees and making photographs.

I’ve written before about how photographing in the redwood forest presents a number of challenges. Some of them are objective — it is very dark here, even in the middle of the day in many cases, and one ends up using very long exposures, sometimes adding up to several seconds. And despite the sense of stillness, it seems that there is always a tiny bit of air movement that affects branches and leaves. But a more complex question is how to render photographs of these places. What the camera records here is quite different than what the eye and the mind see. For some technical reasons I’ve written about previously, while the eye sees rich and deep colors, the camera records something that can appear flatter and dimmer. So the post-processing question always becomes how to move things back toward the light and colors that we remember experiencing. When doing that it is easy to get carried away and perhaps create something that is a bit too much of a fantasy — there’s nothing objectively wrong with that, but the question of how far to go is never far away. I chose here to stick with a rather dark rendition, since I remember that this is how the scene felt to me at the time.
