Birds, Rising Sun

Birds,Rising Sun, Fog
“Birds, Rising Sun” — Passing geese and cranes fly in front of the rising sun on a foggy morning in Central Valley wetlands.

A photograph like this isn’t always possible and is never easy. Obviously, the sun is extremely bright, and this presents some major exposure challenges. At the same time, the sides of the birds and plants facing the camera is in the darkest possible shadow, being on the opposite side of the sun. But on this morning several factors haled out. the high clouds interfered with the sun just a bit, and closer to the ground a bit of tule fog was still hanging on.

Early morning may be the most compelling time in these wetlands. (Though I’ll hear you out if you want to argue for evening.) After arriving in darkness, the sky begins to glow and the light slowly increases. Fog may mute the light and add a sense of mystery. And the birds are coming to life, warming their wings in the first sunlight and then flying out for the day’s activities.

Mercado de Navidad, Plaza Mayor

Mercado de Navidad, Plaza Mayor, Madrid.
“Mercado de Navidad, Plaza Mayor” — Crowds at the Christmas market at Plaza Mayor, Madrid.

One of the great things about travel is that you get to enjoy being naive. No, really. When you go to new places, it is completely normal to not understand everything you see, every tradition, every experience, every norm. It happens in different ways, both major and minor. It happened on this late 2024 trip to parts of Germany, France, and Spain. We knew that we would visit German Christmas markets, but they we learned that Germany has no monopoly on these seasonal events, and they are popular everywhere.

The market in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor was one of the larger ones we encountered in that city. We intended to mostly avoid this tourist magnet, but we ended up there for several reasons after all. First, it seemed to us that we were seeing a lot of Spanish people there — not just international tourists. Second, it was quite impressive to see the place decked out in holiday lights.

Wetlands, Winter Sunset

Wetlands, Winter Sunset, California's Central Valley
“Wetlands, Winter Sunset” — Sunset beyond Central Valley wetlands on a winter evening.

This was just about the final photograph I made on this past New Year’s Day. We had actually started the previous afternoon, come back before dawn, and worked the subject all day long. We photographed the landscape and thousands of migratory birds. As the day drew to a close I found a location with a view of the sunset sky reflected in the surface of nearby pond.

While this is mainly a landscape photograph, if you look very closely you may be able to to spot a group of (most likely) snow geese on the water. Many of their partners had already flow away for the evening, but this final group stuck around bit longer.

Sunday Morning, El Rastro

Sunday Morning, El Rastro,Madrid
“Sunday Morning, El Rastro” — Dense crowds at Madrid’s Sundary morning El Rastro street market.

El Rastro is the huge open air street market in Madrid’s barrio de Embajadores. It is held every Sunday morning and has been for many decades. I read that there can be up to 3500 vendor stalls! They spread across many streets in the area, and you can find almost every imaginable item for sale. At its peak, the streets are jam-packed with shoppers and sight-seers — so much so that it can be difficult to move.

When we visited we knew there was a “street market,” but we had no idea of what a big deal it is. We walked from where we were staying, and we first arrived at some stands in a small square and thought, “That’s it?” We saw more stalls across the street, and when we went to investigate we saw that they extended off into the distance. We plunged in and walked through a good portion of it.
