A granite outcropping and trees reflected in the surface of a subalpine Sierra Nevada lake

This scene was along the edge of a lake I visited on several evenings, hiking up from our base camp during our September week in the Eastern Sierra Nevada backcountry to make photographs. The logical starting point for photographs here was near the lakes outlet, where there was a small, rocky meadow and several nice granite outcroppings that extended into the lake. I initially began by photographing there.

But soon the light left that area and I decided to wander around a bit more. Not far away was a small bay extending off from the main body of the lake, and on the other side of this bay several attractively twisted and bent trees stood on and in front of a large granite outcropping.

With some photographs I find it hard to explain what provoked me to stop and make and exposure, or even why I like it. Since not everything can be explained — though I may try! — I’ll share them anyway on many occasions. This is one of those images. We were walking quickly through a section of Amsterdam with very narrow streets when we passed this closed garage. At that moment I had the camera out and was photographing quite a bit… and this became one of the subjects.

There is something about the clean and simple patterns of the door, the stark contrast between very dark and very light tones, and the very simple sign above the door. In a world where such a business would more often have signage including a more lengthy and complex business name, plus descriptive text and probably things like phone numbers… this one simply states, “GARAGE.”

Talus And Reflecting Water

Giant talus boulders above reflecting waters of an alpine lake

This is another in a series of photographs I made this past summer that feature raw talus fields (possibly with a lake at the base) in blue early morning or evening shade. For some reason this subject seemed to catch my attention this summer on our almost-annual week in the Sierra backcountry — perhaps because this time our base camp was at a high lake situated at the base of a gigantic field of talus descending from the ridge right above us, and because one of the higher lakes I visited several times also featured impressive talus fields.

This photograph comes from that upper lake, which I had hiked to late in the day in order to photograph a different subject before the last light left the shoreline. Having completed that work — and having lost the direct sun — I turned by attention to the far side of this lake, and inhospitable looking landscape of shattered and tumbled rocks and boulders at the base of a cliff at the edge of the lake. At this time of day, in this light, the colors shift strongly toward blue, since the scene is mostly illuminated by the open blue sky plus a bit of light reflected from nearby peaks. The scene evokes for me a whole series of associations and memories based on decades of travel in the high country — the hollow, clattering sound of foot travel on the loose rocks, the sensation of the rocks shifting beneath my feet, the cold air, and the near complete lack of vegetation other than a bit of lichen.

Weathered wall with graffiti, Amsterdam

For the most part I don’t photograph graffiti, and on the rare occasions when I do in the US I may alter the painted “tags” in post in order to avoid giving publicity to folks who, it may be argued, are basically vandalizing the property of others. I’m also sometimes a bit uneasy, when the marks transcend mere graffiti and become street art, about simply capturing an image of someone else’s art and presenting it as my own.

But sometimes I can’t help myself. In fact, on our 2018 European travels we encountered so much graffiti that it would almost be dishonest to pretend that it isn’t part of the urban landscape. (Especially in Berlin. Very much especially in Berlin…) This little example comes from Amsterdam, and I appreciated several things about it. I was intrigued to see that it was mostly constrained to the blocks or rectangular material on the right side of the frame and mostly not on the bricks — almost as if these were somewhat well-mannered graffiti artists. The juxtaposition of shapes and colors interested me in its own right. And then there is that enigmatic “UNFUN” inscription in a somewhat neat sans-serif font, contrasting with the other colorful scrawls on this wall.
