This photograph (and a few others from this trip) illustrate how sometimes a combination of planning and luck come together… and even overcome a bad decision or two. I had checked the forecast the previous evening and it looked like there would be fog along the coast, making a quick visit potentially rewarding. I decided that I’d get up early and head that way. But in the morning one thing led to another, and I was quite late (by photographer standards) getting out the door and on the road. I wondered if perhaps I had missed the timing, and I even considered heading somewhere else.

As I approached the coast I saw that the fog was obstinately sticking around, and it was foggier than I had expected! I headed south, looking for places where the fog was beginning to thin, and this was my first serious stop. Here the rugged coast was already clear, but the fog was just offshore and still covering the taller hills, including the far peak above the distant peninsula. I made a few photographs here and then headed on to a few more spots before returning when the light became too harsh. (As I turned around and headed home I noticed that the influx of tourists was just starting… and that the best light and conditions had passed while they were enjoying breakfast!)

Brilliant autumn sun reflects from the surface of the Pacific Ocean, Big Sur.

For almost my entire life (since my family moved to California from the Upper Midwest when I was four years old) I have lived within hailing distance of the Pacific Ocean and the western shoreline of the North American continent. Although I don’t live literally on the coast — a range of coastal mountains separates me from it — the Pacific is ever-present. That’s where our big winter storms come from. Fog from the coast cools us when the temperatures are in the 100’s further inland. Drives take me past the San Francisco Bay and the rivers emptying into it. And when I need a quick escape I can be over those coastal hills and at the ocean in less than one hour.

This photograph comes from a late-autumn pandemic-era day trip down the coast into what I think of as the “Big Sur coast” below Monterey and Carmel. These visits, as short as they were, reminded me that the natural world was still there and still doing more or less what it had always done. We think of this coast as running north/south, but it actually cuts inward to the east as you travel down it. Because of this, by noon I can photograph straight into the blinding light of the sun reflected on the surface of the sea.

Surf, Fog, and Peninsula

A peninsula disappears into coastal fog beyond a surf-filled bay along California’s rugged Big Sur coast.

Aside from a few camping trips in relatively remote places, we hardly travelled at all between March of 2020 and the beginning of May 2021. I managed to spend a little time in the Eastern Sierra last fall, I had a great visit to Death Valley back in early April, I’ve gotten to the coast a few times, and I did manage one-day trips to photograph birds — but that’s it. So our recent multi-day (and multi-purpose, though that’s a different story…) trip down the California coast and back to visit Southern California was quite special. We planned to go south on route 1, but we then decided to add a night on the return trip so that we could go back home the same way. This photograph comes from a stop along that coastline on a very foggy day.

The region we call the “Big Sur Coast” (from my perspective, encompassing the section from about Point Lobos south to the lower bluffs below Ragged Point) has had a string of tough years. Flooding has repeatedly closed the route, wildfires scorched huge areas, and businesses have suffered. There are numerous causes for the situation, ranging from climate change to increasing tourism, but the place has been changed. On the other hand, the route is open now, and the spell of this rugged section of Pacific coast is as strong as ever.

Well, this is slightly embarrassing. Actually, it would not be — if I just kept the story to myself. (And, indeed, I am keeping part of the story a secret. Feel free to wonder.) Just a few days ago I read about and saw some photographic work that was seemingly defined by its intentional out-of-focus quality. And not in what I regarded as a good way. My response to the work was that it looked like photographs that would have been quite mundane — bordering on snapshots — if they had been in focus. But because they were not, they ended up in a gallery. And now I present… a very out of focus photograph.

So, what to make of this? That’s actually up to you, but to the extent that a photograph is about things or expresses something, well one way to think of it is that by removing some of the familiar details of the subject you are free to think about larger aspects of it that might be less apparent if you were distracted by the “small stuff.” I’m also working with some ideas about color and luminosity here. That’s all I’ll say for now…
