This is another photograph from my late-December visit to the Getty in Los Angeles. To recap… it rained. And it was foggy. Both of which I like. While I love the art at this museum, I’m also a big fan of the architecture — and it is also a fine place to photograph people.
I found this spot with many vertical forms of columns, windows and so forth along with their reflections on the rain-dampened sidewalk/floor. I found a composition I liked… and then I waited as individuals and groups of people crossed this space.

I have photographed this scene before, so it was on my list of places to check out as I drove down the Big Sur coast on the second day of the new year. When I arrived I found very different lighting from that in the linked photograph – that one was shot in the morning with back-light and heavier mist. On this afternoon the surf was big (but not huge) and some mist was being thrown up by the waves, but the late afternoon light more clearly illuminated the rocks and the bridge. I also found a slightly better spot for seeing the natural arch in the foreground rocks. The only difficulty was that a herd of cattle was grazing on the top of the bluff right in front of this scene, and I had to wait for them to move before I could shoot – they were obstructing the arch!
I first thought this would be a color photograph, but the more I worked on it the more I liked the monochrome rendition. To me it seems to take the focus away from the colors and force it more towards the abstract and overlapping forms of the rocks, surf, bridge, and hill beyond.

Columns, wall, and walkway on a rainy day at the Getty Center, Los Angeles, California.
I have photographed this spot before, and it is a bit strange that I shoot it regularly when I visit the Getty. It is not exactly a prominent location at the Center – it is at the bottom of the stairs near the entrance to the cafe. I’m sure most people would just walk right past it, and I wouldn’t blame them given all of the obviously spectacular settings at the Center. However, I’m attracted to the three light colored poles, the reflective floor (especially in light rain), the angles of the walkway, and the way the far wall is lit.

This photograph shows a detail of the columns and roof above the terrace at the Getty Center seen in my previously-posted photograph of this area. Again, the fog and rain have masked the distant view and created diffused lighting. I like the contrast between the constructed forms of the columns, roof, and faintly seen building and the single leafless tree.
