Three Pelicans in Flight, Waddell Beach

Three Pelicans in Flight, Waddell Beach

Three pelicans, blurred by their motion, fly just above the wet sand of a Pacific Ocean beach.

It has been a busy week and it promised to remain busy next week as well, so I decided to make a quick trip over the hill to the Pacific coastline north of Santa Cruz this afternoon with a vague plan to shoot some seascapes and whatever else might come up. The weather today was a type of typical central California winter weather – some tule fog in the morning that cleared to hazy light… perfect for photography in my book! I was hoping for something like this on the coastline, too.

When I arrived I found that it was even more murky along the coast (and colder!) than back home. I finally ended up at the beach where Waddell Creek enters the Pacific and pulled over to stop before turning around and starting back. At just that moment two large groups of pelicans were coming in from the south and landing among sea gulls on the beach. I quickly put the long lens on the camera and very soon the group of birds took off and headed across the shoreline in front of me.

Most often I try to make wildlife photographs as sharp as possible, but at the moment the birds took off that just wasn’t going to be possible. I had a 400mm lens on the camera, the light was very murky, my ISO was still at 100… and the birds were in flight now! So I tracked them as they flew past, blurring the background surf and sand and letting their wings blur as well. In the end, I feel that this blurry shot in which everything seems to be in motion better suits the subject and perhaps conveys the atmosphere of the scene better than sharper photos might. (I later adjusted everything and captured a few more traditionally sharp pelican shots – and in this light they strike me as pretty boring!)

Urban Runner and Tree

Urban Runner and Tree

A person runs past an urban tree and a building with steps, San Francisco, California.

This sequence – there are several other photographs with people walking past this building – started one way and ended up going in a different direction. Initially I was thinking of an “urban landscape” photograph with the natural shape of this sidewalk tree contrasting with the flat surface of the wall, and the rigid lines of the sidewalk/curb and the windows, fences, and stairway. However, as I shot people occasionally walked through the scene and it seemed more interesting with a figure than without. Then, because it was very early morning and quite foggy, I had to shoot at rather slow shutter speeds – too slow to capture distinct images of the people without motion blur.

Summer Grass, Calero Hills

Summer Grass, Calero Hills

Dry summer grasses growing near Castillero Pond at the Calero Hills, California.

In this photograph – yes, from the same series from Castillero Pond – I wanted to isolate the light colored grass seeds from the background, and try to reveal the very delicate stems of the grass and other dry plants. The background was essentially the same color as these subjects and was also terribly detailed – so I used a very narrow depth of field to reduce the background detail to an amorphous blur. Although it might not seem like your typical macro lens, I photographed this with a 100-400mm zoom at 400mm!

Summer Grasses, Morning

Dry summer grasses in morning light along the shore of Castillero Pond, Calero Hills, California.

Yes, another in this series of morning photographs of summer grasses and similar flora. Again, this was photographed at Castillero Pond in the Calero Hills not far from where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. After a few recent trips to the high, alpine terrain near the Sierra Nevada crest, I thought it would be fun to photograph a more local and familiar subject. Although the grasses and cattails were not necessarily what I had on my mind when I went to this location, they quickly become my focus as I explored the shore of this small pond.
