Immense coast redwood trees in an old growth forest, Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

On an early June day our long driving loop took us out to the Lost Coast on a narrow, winding, somewhat lonely, and very scenic road. After dropping precipitously from coastal mountains to an isolated beach it followed to coast south for several miles before again turning inland. The route eventually passed though small hamlets (with the tell-tale plastic covered greenhouses in abundance) and began to climb drier, inland ridges. Finally it once again dropped steeply, entering one of the quietest and most still redwood forest groves I have been in.

After the long drive it was time to stop and this seemed a perfect place. Before long we decided to get out camera equipment and simply wander for a while in the still forest of giant old-growth trees. Even after years of visiting the coastal redwoods, it still surprised me to see how dark it is along the forest floor — little light makes it down from the crowns of the trees hundreds of feet above. This photograph looks off into the forest, and if you inspect it closely you may notice that, aside from the foreground ferns, the entire scene is comprised of the trees.

Several days ago I shared a similar photograph from this same location, a dense line of forest along a roadway in Northern California’s Redwood National Park. I noted that the previous photograph was of a location that I’m mildly obsessed with, a place where I stop every time I pass that way. And to prove it, here is a second photograph of the same subject — and, no, I’m not done yet!

Perhaps because the roadway opens the forest to the sky a bit more, unlike the towering redwood forests which block light very efficiently, these smaller trees seem to have really taken off. They form a dense and impenetrable wall of green that is really only broken by the vertical forms of the mostly-white trunks. Wandering along the edge of this forest, it almost seems like there are compositions everywhere I look.

Rain clouds begin toi build above coastal forest hills near Ferndale, California.

On the last full day of our early-June foray into redwood country in far Northern California, we did a longish loop drive out to the Lost Coast via an uncrowded route on narrow and winding roads. It took us from a small town in farm country over forested ridges, eventually dropping to the coast, where if following the coastline south for some miles before turning inland, passing through rural country (and the location of California’s, uh, “newest agricultural area) and emerging through redwood groves near US 101.

This was our first time traversing this route, so there were new things to discover all day and at almost every turn. The beginning of the route leaves typical flat farmland and rises into high coastal hills, where it alternately twists through forest, follows high ridges, and drops into deep valleys. We stopped along one of those ridges in a place where meadows opened the view. The photograph looks to the northwest and the barely visible Pacific Ocean, as clouds began to build toward a few light afternoon showers.

Bluedicks Flower

Springtime bluedicks flower in the Central California oak-grasslands.

This is a surprisingly common wildflower in my part of California, and in the springtime I frequently run into them all around the Bay Area on hikes, typically in warmer and sunnier areas. The flowers are striking — the cluster sits on the end of a long, slender step, and the colors can stand out against the other foliage. Technically, I suppose that I should tie “flowers” rather than “flower” here, since it is a cluster of smaller individual flowers. The unusual name apparently comes from a shorthand for the Latin name of the plant, though I have recently been told that the plant has been reclassified and that it should now be “blue dips.”

Although I like to travel to do my outdoor photography, I also spend a lot of time in the field not far from where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, often hiking some of the nearby trails. (In fact, I’ve been doing more of that recently as I try to work myself into condition for an upcoming backcountry trip by hiking hilly routes. It gets harder every year!) Although I had hiked the trails where I photographed this specimen, I had not really paid enough attention to the wildflowers there until recently… when I discovered several large populations of this flower.
