Wetlands, Winter Sky

“Wetlands, Winter Sky” — Pre-dawn light colors the sky and clouds above Central Valley wetlands on a winter morning.

Happy holidays on this Christmas morning! This is an older photograph, made on a winter morning a few years ago. I had arrived at this location well before sunrise to photograph migratory birds with a group of fellow photographers. Soon light started to come to the sky, and high, thin clouds started to pick up color in the brilliant early sky. The clouds and colors were reflected in a nearby wetlands pond as birds flew overhead.

I mentioned that I was there to photograph migratory birds, but sometimes I must admit that the birds may be, in part, an excuse to photograph the winter landscape. I certainly do photograph the birds out here — a lot — but I often photograph them in the landscape rather than as individuals. In fact, we’ve coined a term for these photographs of the landscapes of the birds: “birdscapes.”

Geese, Morning Clouds

Geese, Morning Clouds
“Geese, Morning Clouds” — A flock of geese in flight against morning clouds, Central Valley, California.

Sunrise often produces remarkable light, especially when the right sorts of clouds are present. These clouds were a bit unusual for this location, where I usually either encounter thick tule fog or high clouds produced by large scale weather patterns. These morning clouds were lower than usual, but not ground fog, and having a bit of the “mackerel sky” look. I photographed them as the first light arrived and a flock of migratory geese passed overhead.

I photograph a lot of different subjects, but in the late fall and winter months the migratory birds become a major focus. It is easy to miss their arrival if you live in a city, but in rural parts of California their presence, often in astounding numbers, is pretty obvious. I photographed these in an otherwise nondescript agricultural area in the Central Valley.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis Reservoir
“Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir” — The Manhattan skyline below Central Park from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis Reservoir.

Last fall we were in New York for family visits and to see a performance at the Metropolitan Opera. It was a lovely autumn day in Manhattan so we went for a long walk. We typically stay at a place a bit to the west of the Park, and our mornings often include walks there in one form or another. This time we headed further north from our usual routes and ended up walking around this manmade lake.

When I think of Central Park, this reservoir isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. To me it is more about lawns and trees and curving pathways, people enjoying what counts as the “natural world” in this city, and a steady stream of walkers, cyclists, runners, and more. But it seems to get less crowded up here by the lake, and views open up, unobstructed by trees.

Central Station, Glasgow

Central Station, Glasgow

“Central Station, Glasgow” — The Central Railrway Station and underpass, downtown Glasgow, Scotland.

The Scottish railway tracks reach this station via a nearby bridge over the River Clyde, and the tracks are still elevated here. Above we see a glass roof designed to light the interior, while below we see… an underpass between two sections of Glasgow’s downtown. Because rail transportation is common in the UK and Europe we see many more railway stations than we are used to in the US. There are some very modern stations, but many of them are more utilitarian and feature older architecture.

Although we arrived in and left from Glasgow by rail, we never made it inside this station. We came upon it near the end of a very long walk that took us from downtown Glasgow to the West End and then following the River Clyde. We turned into the city when we arrived at the railway bridge over the city.
