Dust Storm…

I can report with some authority that doing photography in Death Valley in the middle of a dust storm (of the sort that almost turns day to night) is not easy. :-)

I’ve been in Death Valley since Tuesday, shooting a variety of subjects – some iconic and some not. I had contemplated staying through until Saturday morning, but I decided late Thursday that I’d go ahead and leave after shooting on Friday morning. My initial plan was to get up at my usual 5:00 a.m. time and head out somewhere to shoot a dawn subject, after which I would return to the Stovepipe Wells campground to break camp and head out. I got up quickly and decided I might have time to quickly break camp before doing photography, so I quickly knocked the tent down and loaded everything into my car.

After shooting at Zabriskie Point (can’t get much more “iconic” than that!) I started back toward the Towne Pass exit – and spotted a huge ugly dust cloud forming up near Tucki Mountain, which rises right above Stovepipe Wells near the Mesquite Dunes (a.k.a “Death Valley Dunes). As I got closer the already strong wind became even more violent and I soon entered the fringe of the dust storm. By the time I turned across the Valley toward the Dunes and Stovepipe the cloud had turned into a malevolent beast, with wind whippped sand streaming across the roadway and the sun completely blotted out.

The scene was very nasty as I drove past Stovepipe Wells… and I was extremely glad that I had made that early morning decision to pack up at 5:15!

What are YOU shooting this weekend?

Just saw a twitter (ahem, a tweet..) from Jim Goldstein asking what folks are shooting on this spring weekend. My immediate plan is to get out and photograph some of the “impossibly green” California grassland and some spring wildflowers this weekend – but also to prepare for an upcoming visit to Death Valley.

What are you shooting this weekend and beyond?

Detail view of a section of the base of Tucki Mountain in early morning light – near Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley National Park, California.

I had started this early April morning by hiking around to the back side of Mesquite Dunes near Stovepipe Wells before sunrise. After shooting sunrise in and around the dunes I decided to make some photographs of Tucki Mountain, a massive peak that towers above the Dunes and Stovepipe Wells and dominates the view of this part of the Valley. Here the very early sunlight is slanting across the lower slopes of the mountain from the left with the light catching the folded textures of this rugged peak. This photograph is a stitch of three 12MP photographs.

Looking west from Aguereberry Point across high peaks of Death Valley National Park toward the Sierra Nevada.

In April of 2008 I spent a number of days photographing in and around Death Valley National Park. On the third day I finished driving down through Titus Canyon in the afternoon and found myself with some extra travel time, so I headed up to Aguereberry Point where there is a high and austere view of Death Valley. After photographing the Valley and watching the last light leave the valley floor I headed back to the parking area and pointed my camera west toward the setting sun and the distant ridges of the southern Sierra Nevada range.
