Shoreline, Pond, and Mountains

“Shoreline, Pond, and Mountains” — Early evening sun lingers on the shoreline of a small pond beneath the Sierra Nevada crest.

This pond was a frequent subject when I camped nearby on a mid-July backpacking trip into the Sierra Nevada. We camped just below the crest of the range east of Yosemite National Park. This valley holds numerous lakes, and we camped at one of the larger ones. The pond shown in the photo was nearby — less than a one minute walk from my campsite.

I photographed this subject both early and late in the day, the times when the light is more agreeable. This photo comes from early on my evening photography outing, when the shadows were just beginning to lengthen and stretch across the landscape.

Trees, Meadow and Path
“Trees, Meadow and Path” — A wilderness path leads past a small creek, meadow, and trees to the shoreline of a subalpine Sierra Nevada lake.

In late July I headed into the Sierra Nevada backcountry on a short backpack trip with a group of friends. The trip was special, as I first backpacked with some of them decades ago. It had been quite a while since I went into the wilderness with this gang — so it was something of a reunion. Of course, being the only photographer on the trip meant that I did end up spending some time alone, especially in the early mornings.

Why is that? Well, apparently normal people do not climb out of their sleeping bags when it is still cold and dark outside, and then head out carrying photography gear to look for composition in the pre-dawn light. I hear that most o them, in fact, stay in their sleeping bags, waiting for the sun to warm their tents! I spent a couple of early hours wandering this alpine landscape, making this photograph before the direct sunlight had yet arrived here.

Dubrovnik Rooftops

Dubrovnik is a remarkable city — very old, very beautiful, and today a sophisticated center of tourism. The age of the place becomes more obvious the further you get away from the central tourist areas. Out around the furthest fringes, on very narrow walkways, you can find places that seem almost… unspoiled.

The old city is almost completely ringed by an ancient wall — the only gap is near the small harbor. On this evening I set out to walk the perimeter of the town along the wall. I made the photograph early on my walk as the light was just beginning to take on the colors of early evening as I looked across a sea of red rooftops.

These badlands formations, where soft layers have been eroded by water, can be difficult to photograph. Those difficulties can lead to ethical questions for photographers. The issue is that the range of colors and luminosity in these formations is very limited — the color is basically a light tan and the difference between the light and dark areas is small, at least in soft light. One choice is to enhance that contrast and coloration during the post-processing phase, and that can create some impressive images… though this can depart radically from the actual appearance of the landscape. Here I decided to go with the low contrast and soft colors instead.

To repeat a story I’ve previously related, almost by accident I ended up here to photograph a subject that ultimately did not develop as I had hoped. So I turned my attention to other things nearby, including these formations. I photographed them rather early, before the direct sunlight arrived. This meant that the contrast was even more subdued, as the soft light was from the early morning open sky — directional, but only subtly so.
