Desert light (like that in quite a few other places) can go through a remarkable transformation late its the day, a transformation that mirrors the one taking place in the morning. In the middle of the day, the light is often quite intense, rather bluish (from that gigantic light panel we call the “sky), and the landscape is full of harsh contrasts between highlights and shadows. At some point in the very late afternoon, assuming a cooperative surrounding landscape and the right weather conditions, the light imperceptibly begins to soften and warm in color. If you were not attuned to this you might not notice at first, but eventually it becomes obvious as the process accelerates and intensifies, producing a sort of “crescendo of light” that often peaks just before it ends.

I made this photograph somewhere in the middle of that cycle — far enough along that the color has definitely warmed, but not so late that the full sunset redness has arrived. At this point the light changes rapidly, and features that I had not noticed suddenly become interesting. I often find myself working quite quickly at this point — perhaps in contrast to how some people imagine landscape photography works. In these situations I often like to work with zoom lenses with long focal lengths. This allows me to quickly respond to things I see at varying distances, to isolate smaller sections of the landscape, and to quickly try out different compositional ideas.

If you have been following along recently, you may recall me writing that this rocky ridge would show up a few more times in the photographs from my recent Death Valley visit. Although I never actually went to that ridge, it was off to the side as I walked to and from another subject on one evening and the following morning. The ridge runs a bit further to the right before ending with a spur that extends slightly into the broad, flat desert valley beyond.

Late in the day the surface of this ridge takes on the warm tones of sunset light, and the color of the ridge is quite different. Some red tones in the rock combine with the reddish light to produce a very colorful appearance. But this photograph was made the next morning, when the light comes from the other direction, leaving that same face in the cool-toned shadows. I made the photograph as the sun was gaining enough elevation to shine over the top of the ridge, striking the sand dunes that are near its base.

Given the opportunity, I like to visit Death Valley twice each year — once during winter and again around the start of spring. While the spring visit brings the hope of seeing a brief wildflower bloom, winter is less crowded (and, yes, it can be crowded in this park) and feels more elemental. I’m just back from the winter visit, and I had the chance to both revisit some familiar places and push out the boundaries a bit by visiting locations that were new to me.

I was in a fairly remote part of the park on this morning, awake early to walk a mile or so to my intended subject. Due to the sun direction and geography, I didn’t need to start out in complete darkness… which inevitably meant that I was distracted by the landscape as I walked toward my primary goal. The sand-covered hills in this photograph are located at the end of a much taller ridge, and their extension into the large valley beyond places the tallest peaks in the early morning sunlight. More desert mountains rise in the distance beyond the wide valley.

My first memories of Sierra Nevada aspen trees could not be more different than what we see in this photograph. Those early experiences came on backpacking trips when trails briefly traversed small groves. I’m thinking of several of them as I write this — a small section along a trail to Cathedral Lakes, arriving at such groves when descending from the crest on the east side, various other backcountry locations. I always associated them with the “High Sierra,” the high elevation, forested wilderness that lies below the exposed high peaks.

It was much later that my perception evolved and encompassed the recognition that these trees can be part of what is essentially a high desert terrain just as easily. I recall a drive east of US 395 into such an area a few decades ago on which I was surprised to find groves of aspens surrounded by rangeland and no other trees. I soon became aware of what had always been there but which I had not noticed — small groups of such trees all along and near the base of the eastern Sierra. This small grove, along with a bunch of shorter brush, grows in a small creek bed passing through an area that is otherwise profoundly dry and seemingly barren.
