Yes, this is yet one more — but probably the last — of the photographs of this lovely autumn evening at Mono Lake a few years ago. Most of the others feature the rising full moon, but I made this one a few minutes before that event, while the last of the day’s sun was still streaming over the Sierra crest and striking the tops of the mountains to the east of Mono Basin.

Besides being a photograph of a beautiful time of day at the lake, the scene includes a number of important little elements that might not be immediately obvious. In the foreground we see a few of the ubiquitous tufa formations that dot the border of the lake, quite a few of which were revealed when Los Angeles’ thirst for Sierra Nevada dropped the lake level. This also reveals sections of the curving lake shore that would have been underwater some decades ago. At the far left is the dark bulk of Black Point, and intriguing formation that few get to actually visit. Just of Black Point’s shoulder is Negit Island, one of two volcanic islands in the lake. to its right you can barely see the low north side of larger Paoho island. And those far mountains where a bit of sun still shines are a very long ways away, and it a location that is pretty close to inaccessible.

Recently I was once again pondering how the way we approached the Sierra Nevada at first affected our overall perceptions of the character of the Range of Light. As I have noted before, during the first decades of my relationship with these mountains I approached from the west, crossing semi-coastal mountains, crossing the agricultural Central Valley, rising gradually into oak-grasslands and eventually to conifer forest, and only much later finally arriving in the “High Sierra” world of open meadows and alpine peaks. Contrast this with the experience of those approaching from the east, where the range presents a very long “wall” of peaks that towers above high desert, in places rising by as much as 10,000 feet above that dry landscape.

This photograph is, probably obviously, one that focuses on that eastern part of the Sierra. But here I look away from the Sierra Nevada, past the rugged and “barren” terrain of dry hills at the base of the range, across the expanse of Owens Valley, and toward the (also dry) peaks of the White Mountains. To put it plainly, you won’t see anything like this on the west side!

Early autumn snow and aspens changing color in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

Yesterday I was out on one of my regular urban walks, and as I crossed over a local creek on a bridge I noticed a significant number of yellow leaves on trees and on the ground. To be sure, there are still far more green leaves, and the actual full-on arrival of autumn color is many weeks away. (Here in California it is common to raise our expectations of fall’s imminent arrival in early September… only to realize once again that we have a month and a half of mostly warm weather ahead of us.) But it is clear that the seasons are in transition and that autumn is coming.

Scenes like the one on this photograph are still a good month away at best. This small grove of aspens grows in an area of what is more or less high desert along the eastern edge of the range. I fondly recall this day and many others like it, traveling along the base of these mountains, looking for aspen color, and seeing snow showers above the crest and signifying the approach of winter.

The existence of this photograph can be credited to two women. The first is my wife Patricia Mitchell. We were in the Eastern Sierra in a the autumn a few years ago to photograph fall colors. On this morning we were supposed to get up early and go photograph aspens, but we were lazy — we slept in and enjoyed breakfast, which is not the typical photographer’s ritual. Devil’s Postpile seemed like a potential option for photography a bit later in the morning, so that’s where we went. Arriving, I wasn’t so sure — there were crowds and the early light was gone — and initially I was going to leave my camera behind and just walk over and take a look… but “someone” urged me to bring the camera gear along just in case.

The second woman who played an (unknown to her) role in the appearance of this photograph is friend and photographer Franka Mlikota Gabler. She recently shared a set of lovely photographs of this location, and these photographs got me thinking about my one visit to the place… and inspired me to back into the raw file archive, where I found this photograph from that lazy morning when I almost left my camera behind.
