We made a brief stop in Chester, England last June during our travels in Scotland, Ireland, and England. When I write “brief,” I mean a matter of hours! We had heard that Chester has interesting old buildings, a bit like Shrewsbury, so we scheduled our trains between the latter town and Liverpool to give us a layover there of a few hours. We had just enough time to grab a bite, walk a good section of the town walls, wander past some downtown shops, and visit the Chester Cathedral.

A photograph may resonate in multiple ways and for many reasons. Sometimes the fact that it captures an interesting or important moment is sufficient, regardless of technical or esthetic quality. Or it might be about composition and the relationship among its component parts in the abstract. It might evoke a memory or an association. It could appeal on its intrinsic visual qualities — tonalities, light, color, and more. Many photographs work in more than one of these and others not listed here.

We were out for a walk in Shrewsbury, and as we crossed a bridge over the River Severn we spotted this swan family in the water. The trick is usually to get critters to align themselves with the rest of the scene in a way that is compositionally interesting and makes them the primarily focus. Darned birds don’t always cooperate! But this time I only had to wait a moment — and then photograph quickly — for them to cross the river in the foreground.

It seems that I left some of my photographs from our spring 2026 visit to Scotland, Ireland, and England behind. That happens from time to time, usually when I get distracted by some other photographic project. But I’ve plunged back into the rather large collection of raw files from that trip, and I’m working on them once again. This photograph comes from our visit to Bath, England following our weeklong walk in the Cotswolds.
