On one hand, this is a pleasant enough scene. I had headed to the California coast just north of Santa Cruz for the morning. This is one of the closest coastal locations to me, and I can be in sight o the ocean in a bit over a half hour or so. It was a typical late-spring coastal morning, with thick fog around the peaks as I drove over, and “high fog” (aka “low clouds”) all along the coast. The fog breaks up first over land, and along the this edge of the fog there is often lovely light — mixed sun and shadow, misty atmosphere, and a general soft glow. The bucolic little farm sits against the base of coastal hills, on a flat area near small lagoons.

But there’s something else in this photograph that you may have noticed if you looked closely. That far, upper ridge should be shrouded in forest trees… not the bare, skeletal remains of trees destroyed by last year’s wildfires in the Big Basin region. As a Californian, I’m used to the late-summer and early-autumn wildfire season. In the past decade or so, however, it has become worse and more widespread as the combination of unusual heat and drought have stressed the landscape. This past fire season all kinds of places burned where don’t usually expect to see such huge fires, including locations like this one where the charred forests extend to within sight of the ocean, and in a few cases all the way to it.

First of all, about the sort of vague title for this photograph… I do tend to use titles for some photographs, particularly landscapes and wildlife, that don’t give away too much information about the subject. I have my reasons. For one thing, I think that the photograph should be free to speak to the viewer visually, mostly on its own merits and without telling the viewer what to think. For another, in some cases it is better to not focus people’s attention too much of the specific location, particularly if that might distract them from the visual value of the photograph and double-particularly if the location is one that might be at risk of damage if too many people went looking for it.

However, none of those noble — or so I tell myself — considerations are at work here. The truth is… I have no idea what kind of plant this is. I don’t even recall specifically the act of making the photograph, though I do know that it was during a visit to a garden that we went to order to photograph flowers and plants. (At about this point, someone will know what kind of plant it is and write to let me know. I’m counting on you! :-)

This is another photograph that isn’t quite totally new. Some years ago I made several exposures of this little scene, with the two trees with fall color backed by the rocky cliff face. (To be sure, this was not the only time I photographed these trees — this is a favorite spot of mine in the right conditions.) But This one is just a bit different than the earlier one — a very slightly different position, I think, and a different crop, plus some refinement of how I approached the post processing.

I sort of wonder if it may be too early to start sharing fall color photographs. Ah, heck, no! Never too early for that! In fact, my mind is typically on at least three seasons at a time anyway. First, the season that just passed and from which I still have raw files to process. Second the current season because, well, that’s obvious, right? Third, one season beyond the current one — because I always have slightly longer term plans running in the back of my mind.

Collecting quotations about photography is an occasional hobby of mine. (Making them up is, too!) One of my favorites comes from Minor White: “One should not only photograph things for what they are but for what else they are.” (There are several slightly different versions of this remark, so I suspect it is something that he referred to a lot.) This is a powerful and loaded observation, it has quite a few implications, and it points an appropriately wagging finger at those folks who seem to think that photography is nothing more than a way to “capture” things in some form imagined to be “objective.”

This is, perhaps obviously, one of those photographs of “what it is” and “what else it is.” The objective reality of this subject is pretty mundane — a pair of metal roll-up doors on a light-industrial building. I photographed it in bright, harsh sunlight, and the original includes colors not present in the monochromatic presentation I chose here. So, a couple fo doors, a bit of wall, and some dark concrete. Yet, that’s not what I really “see” when I look at this photograph — for me that “what else it is” is the main focus, to the point that I have to almost remind myself of the original subject.
