September Rain

September Rain
“September Rain” — A late-season rain shower over Sierra Nevada crest peaks and a stand of trees.

This photograph comes from that wonderful late-season time when the crowds diminish, the temperatures drop, things seem to slow down, and there are clear signs that the summer weather is coming to an end. I had gone to the Sierra just east of Yosemite for a few days of camping and photography. The weather was cold and blustery, and the sky was spitting rain as I set up my tent.

With camp set up, I had time to look around and notice the veil of rain draped across the rugged features of this nearby mountain, lit by soft light coming through the showers. I walked a short distance from my camp, found some interesting foreground trees, set up, and made this photograph before the rain arrived in camp.

Tulip After Rain

Patty and I had a plan to visit a Bay Area garden where she often photographs spring flowers. According to the calendar, it was time for the tulips and other flowers to be at peak bloom. But as the day approached, it was clear that there was a chance of rain which, to say the least, can make this sort of photography challenging. We headed there early in the morning anyway, and it rained on us during the drive. The clouds were still thick when we arrived. Things were looking a bit uncertain.

But what had looked like deal-breaker weather actually turned out to be nearly perfect. The rain stopped, and we had intermittent sunshine and clouds — all kinds of interesting light. And while the rain ended, there was water everywhere, including on these colorful tulip blooms.

Curving Street, Rain

Part of what I love about Italy is that many cities’ central areas are so old that they were laid out before motor vehicles existed. Consequently streets are quite narrow — in some cases only wide enough for pedestrians. The entrances to homes and businesses are right on the streets — no “front lawn, and no fences. These streets usually don’t follow a geometric grid design, instead radiating from a central square or following the contours of the landscape.

The old, central part of Arezzo, Italy includes areas that follow this formula — though there are also newer streets that are wide enough for some vehicle traffic. We wandered streets like this one on a rainy afternoon, when the showers made the cobblestones glisten.

Pelicans, Winter Surf

Pelcans, Winter Surf
“Pelicans, Winter Surf” — A quartet of brown pelicans flies above raging winter surf off the California coast below San Francisco.

During last week’s extremely big surf we headed right over to the coast to witness and photograph the conditions. Waves were up to 30′ tall and even higher, and a winter “King tide” sent those waves right up onto the shore in many places. You might have seen news reports of damage to some coastal areas. While staying safe, we were able to get pretty close to the action on a drive between Santa Cruz and Half Moon bay, and we made quite a few photographs.

Most of the photographs were essentially seascapes — the watery equivalent of landscape images, featuring the shapes and colors and so on of the moving water. But as I made a series of photographs of this huge wave a line of pelicans flew through the frame, passing just above the raging surf.
