Black and white photograph of the Amargosa Range as seen through the windows of the abandoned school in the ghost town of Rhyolite Nevada. While the ghost town of Rhyolite is in Nevada, the eastern border of Death Valley National Park, including the Amargosa Range, is nearby and visible from here.

Light Beams Over the Panamint Mountains

I’ve been very lucky to encounter this phenomenon more than once when I’ve been in Death Valley. Although I know that most of the time it can be perfectly (too perfectly) clear there, I’ve seen clouds build over the Panamints in the afternoon during my April visits and then thin just enough late in the day to let these light beams shine through and illuminate the lower reaches of the Panamint Range.

Aguereberry Point provides an astonishing viewpoint over Death Valley and a 360 degree panorama that extends to the southern Sierra Nevada range.

Looking northwest across the Panamints toward the Sierra Nevada crest at sunset from Aguereberry Point, Death Valley National Park, California. Entirely apart from any photographic merits, being alone on top of this very isolated point thousands of feet above Death Valley as the sun set was an amazing experience.
