Wetlands, Winter Sky

“Wetlands, Winter Sky” — Pre-dawn light colors the sky and clouds above Central Valley wetlands on a winter morning.

Happy holidays on this Christmas morning! This is an older photograph, made on a winter morning a few years ago. I had arrived at this location well before sunrise to photograph migratory birds with a group of fellow photographers. Soon light started to come to the sky, and high, thin clouds started to pick up color in the brilliant early sky. The clouds and colors were reflected in a nearby wetlands pond as birds flew overhead.

I mentioned that I was there to photograph migratory birds, but sometimes I must admit that the birds may be, in part, an excuse to photograph the winter landscape. I certainly do photograph the birds out here — a lot — but I often photograph them in the landscape rather than as individuals. In fact, we’ve coined a term for these photographs of the landscapes of the birds: “birdscapes.”

Stream, Autumn Reflections

Stream, Autumn Reflections
“Stream, Autumn Reflections” — An Eastern Sierra Nevada stream reflects autumn aspen colors.

This is an older photograph (by a year or so) of a stream that I have photographed before — and I have shared other photographs of it here. It is a spot that I frequently pass, often stopping but typically not photographing. In some ways the subject can seem like a bit of a one-trick pony, and it is often photographed in pretty much the same way. But I stopped on this afternoon and liked the light, especially the bright aspens and their reflection in the stream.

On a technical note, this is a somewhat challenging kind of photograph to make. The difficulty is that there is a huge range of luminosity values between the brightly sunlit golden aspen leaves and the much darker creek running through the shadows. In the early days of digital photography this might have required a blend of two or more images, each optimized for either the bright or dark tones. But with a modern camera it is now possible to capture a useful single exposure and post-process it while retaining good quality.

Lake, Mountains, and Autumn Aspens

Lake., Mountains, and Autumn Aspens
“Lake, Mountains, and Autumn Aspens” — Colorful autumn aspen trees line the shoreline of an Eastern Sierra lake.

This photograph comes from a popular spot in the Eastern Sierra, along a road that loops out from US 395 south of Lee Vining. While the general area is not my favorite location for photographing fall color, there’s no denying that there are some pretty spectacular vistas here, including along the shore of this lake, a place popular with anglers and people camped at a nearby RV resort. But those trees! And those mountains!

Thinking of this place brings to mind once again the variations in autumn color in the eastern Sierra. This location, being at a somewhat lower elevation and perhaps because it is more affected by high desert climate, tends to see the colors arrive a bit later in the season. Knowing that, as I was starting a long drive back to the Bay Area I swung through here to take a final look before continuing on.

First Light, Mono Lake

First Light, Mono Lake
“First Light, Mono Lake” — Colorful dawn light over Mono Lake just before the rising sun clears the mountains.

Arising for dawn is a challenge for many people. I understand, but I think the rewards earned by getting up early are worth it — though I do have to remind myself or this sometimes as I contemplate my alarm going off a few hours before sunrise. But once I’m up and on my way, I actually enjoy the entire experience — the pre-dawn travel in darkness, the first glow in the eastern sky, the anticipation as the light builds, the first direct light on peaks, and eventually the sun itself. If you can’t imagine getting up that early, just try it a few times. I suspect you might get hooked.

I was in the Eastern Sierra to photograph fall colors, camped up some high valley on the east side of the range near the entrance to Yosemite National Park. On this morning I ended up at Mono Lake, where I set up and watched as the sky filled with intense color and the first rays of the sun peeked over the distant desert mountains beyond the lake.
