This just might be my final “old year” photograph of 2022, though most of you won’t see it until a few days into 2023. Back on the day after Christmas I headed over the coastal mountains to the Pacific shoreline north of Santa Cruz, California. It was kind of a strange day. A storm was working its way toward California from the North Pacific, producing large surf and a building cloud deck. The clouds were still thin enough to allow some sunlight in, but coastal haze and thin fog produced odd, pinkish colors.

Before I made this photograph I had been photographing the impressive surf just off this beach. Here the slope into the ocean is gradual, and even during this season when surf often erodes beaches the shallows stretches quite a ways out from the surf line. These objects (old, worn pieces of driftwood) were right at the edge of the water, and the shallows beyond reflected the color of the cloudy sky.

Five brown pelicans skim along just above the surf along the California coast on a winter day.

Photographing along this section of California’s coast presents a lot of decisions. Should I focus on winter surf, the haze and clouds, the land-meets-sea landscape, beaches, surfers and beachcombers, wildlife? I usually start out with one or two of these in mind — it was the atmosphere and the waves on this visit — but soon get distracted by the others.

The coastal pelicans are usually spotted gliding along just offshore, heading north or south along the coast. (They do land, but it is less common to find them settled on the ground.) They often fly extremely close to the water — so close that it seems that they are almost touching it as they follow the counters of the rising and falling surf.

Headlands and Mist

Morning mist floating among headlands on the Big Sur coast.

This photograph shows of the features that sets the Big Sur coast apart — along much of its length the land drops precipitously from tall headlands directly into the ocean. This cuts off easy access to the ocean in these areas — helping maintain the wild quality of the coast here. These headlands and cliffs also produce an extraordinarily dramatic meeting of land and sea.

Although this photograph comes from a well-known and easily accessible location, similar scenes are found all along this central section of the California coastline. I photographed somewhat early in the morning when the sun was still ascending over the coastal mountains, casting shadows on the cliffs and the edge of the water. A bit of thin fog increases the atmospheric recession between the sections of headland cliffs.

Pacific Ocean, Big Sur

Looking west across the Pacific Ocean from the Big Sur mountains on a quiet autumn day.

Views like this never fail to make me pause. There’s something about an expanse of “empty” earth, whether liquid or solid, that focuses the attention. It could be standing at the Arctic Circle and looking north (which I’e done only once), viewing expansive desert terrain from a mountain ridge, or looking across the ocean toward the distant horizon from a high viewpoint. I’m not sure I can articulate the attraction precisely, but it includes the immense space, the absence of obvious human presence, and the encounter with deep time in a place that has probably looked like this for what seems like forever.

Perhaps ironically, this particular view is from a spot along the Pacific Coast Highway that can be crowded ruing the high tourist season. However, on this late-autumn weekday morning there was almost no one else around, and I shared this spot with a single cyclist who had stopped for a snack at the top of the climb.
