As I entered Yosemite on Highway 120 during the first weekend of June I stopped at one of my favorite dogwood groves along this road. The diffused light from overcast and the intense colors from early morning rain created striking colors in this grove – and I was surprised to find that there were still many dogwood blooms. While wandering around looking for just the right blossoms I happened to look down and notice a lot of lush new undergrowth including this little patch of false solomon’s seal.

As I drove into Yosemite via the highway 120 “north” entrance, shortly after entering the park I passed by a large dogwood grove at the bottom of a steep descent. I know this spot well, and I watch if for dogwood blossoms every spring – and I can often find blossoms here long after they have gone from the Valley. On this morning the colors were intense from the previous day’s rain and due to the slightly overcast conditions. I was surprised to find that even at the end of the first week of June there were still some very nice looking dogwood blossoms and intense green leaves everywhere. The leaves in this photograph are on one of the dogwood trees in a shady section of the forest.

Ferns and rock along the creek at Muir Woods National Monument, California.

I found this mini garden alongside the one of the main trails through the central grove at Muir Woods – it was just on the other side of a low fence and next to the creek. As I walk along an area like this I take my time and try to keep my eye out for small scenes that could easily be overlooked, and the juxtaposition of the brown fern leaf with the very green new growth of ferns, moss, and sorrel caught my eye.

Coastal rock formations glisten in the rain as an evening squall approaches a shoreline bluff on the Pacific Coast north of Davenport, California.

A landscape orientation photograph of more or less the same scene I posted earlier this week, though this photograph includes a bit of the distant bluff a bit further south along the coast and the early sunset light is just barely beginning to illuminate the base of the rain cell near the right side of the frame.
