A dry wash, eroded hills, and dramatic sky.

This dry wash leads off into barren (though colorful and fascinating) desert hills. I was here early one morning during a 2019 visit to Death Valley National Park. I spent a few quiet hours working my way though a nearby canyon, making photographs, and I stopped here for a bit to investigate this dry wash that seemed as if it might have been wet in the not-too-distant past.

Washes like this one are fascinating places. In a world where we often feel that we should stick to the trail and follow the established route, they invite us to improvise our way into the landscape. Walking up such a wash, it is impossible to find anything resembling a trail. While you may you may have a general direction in mind, the immediate route deviates around rocks, heads toward an interesting plant, ducks into shade, stops at a colorful rock, and goes just about anywhere else that your feet and thoughts might lead you.

Desert Pinnacles

These lonely tufa tower pinnacles stand alone in the middle of a very large Southern California desert valley. If you passed on the nearby highway and did not know they were there you could easily overlook them — though when you do spot them they make a striking sight.

Beyond their austere and striking visual appeal, they also provide evidence of the remarkable ways that the landscape formed. Despite being in a location which today seems about as arid and unforgiving as you can imagine, they were formed by water. This entire basin was filled with a lake a long time ago, and the towers grew around submerged springs. When the lake disappeared the towers remained.

One of the things I miss most during this time of travel restrictions is the chance to be in the grand landscape, the landscape of deserts, mountains, ocean, and valleys that extends into the far distance. I do get outside daily, for neighborhood walks and to work in our garden, but all of these are landscapes on a much smaller scale.

I made this photograph last year on a foray down the California coast, where I can never get enough of the grand westward views out over the ocean and toward the distant horizon. On this day the scene was softened by big clouds and atmospheric haze over the ocean that glowed in the sunlight.

The fact that I’m unable to be in the field making new photographs right now is a good reminder that photography is more than taking a camera into the field to find and capture subjects. There is a lot that happens before the exposure — perhaps years of accumulated experience with subjects and how they might be photographs. And there is a lot that happens after the exposure — review, selection, experimentation, carrying out the plan for images that I had in mind when I made the exposures, and more. For now I’m living photographically mostly in that post-exposure world.

I photographed this scene on a memorable morning last spring in a remote area of California hills. I was there to photograph flowers, but this lovely morning of fog and soft dawn light distracted me. It was one of those wonderful unexpected moments in photography that reminded me of how much serendipity is involved in this endeavor.
