For those of you sitting on the fence about getting a copy of Adobe Lightroom, you might think about acting now – B&H is offering Lightroom at 50% off for 24 hours only. Unless you have access to the academic pricing, this is as low as I’ve seen the price go.

All Stops Special – Caltrain Station
All Stops Special – Caltrain Station. San Francisco, California. July 10, 2010. © Copyright G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.
The San Francisco Caltrain station, photographed through glass lobby windows.
I frequently ride Caltrain to the City to do street photography. (Getting there by train is far better for me than taking the car, mainly because I think I can do more effective photography of this sort when I’m working completely on foot and not dealing with the whole driving/parking thing.) In this photograph I liked the nearly empty glass-enclosed lobby area, lit by very diffused light under the early morning fog, and with the trains visible on the other side. The “All Stops Special” sign seems enigmatic when seen out of context.
By the way, as much as San Francisco residents love the sunny and warmer days that occasionally come to the City this time of year, for photography I much prefer at least some fog and cloudiness, especially when I try to shoot during the daytime hours.

Wall and Signs, The Mission
Wall and Signs, The Mission. San Francisco, California. February 20, 2010. © Copyright G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.
Brightly colored yellow and blue wall with red and white sign and restaurant window with food photographs, The Mission, San Francisco, California.
Another photograph of the subject I posted earlier – some very colorfully painted walls in the Mission District of San Francisco. While the previous one was a tighter crop in “landscape” orientation, I composed this one to show more of the vertical lines and to include the window-posted menu on the right side. Kind of makes me hungry just to look at it!

A number of Canon lenses are eligible for an”instant savings” price right now. But act soon since these prices are only in effect for about two more weeks until January 16. This list includes the rebate amounts and links to the lenses at B&H Photo/Video. - EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS ($150 “instant savings”)
- EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L ($80 “instant savings”)

Highlights from this list?
- Obviously, all four of the excellent EF 70-200mm lenses are on many photographers’ “must have” lists – and all of them are included in this program.
- The 24-70 f/2.8 is a “core lens” for many full-frame shooters.
- Both of the ultra-wide (on full frame, or just “wide” on cropped sensor) L lenses are on sale. The 17-40 is a wonderful lens for stopped down landscape and similar shooting on full frame bodies, and the 16-35 is a great choice on full frame if your main need is for shooting hand held in very low light.
- The 85mm f/1.2 L is certainly a fine lens, and for the those who need it this is a good savings. (Frankly, the vast majority of 85mm prime users will be at least as well served by the much less expensive non-L f/1.8 edition.)
- For cropped sensor camera shooters looking for (what I regard as) the “best” lens for high quality general use, the EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 IS may be ideal. For most cropped sensor camera shooters – even the most “serious” – I think it is a better choice that either the 17-40 or 16-35 L lenses.
- The EFS 10-22 is pretty much the only Canon option for those who want ultra-wide angle coverage on cropped sensor bodies, and many people (especially landscape shooters) rely on this lens.
