Evening comes to boulder strewn alpine meadows to the west of high Sierra Nevada peaks.

This photograph comes from I might characterize as a “group hike” up into the high country from our “photographers’ base camp” in the Sierra backcountry back in August. My recollection is that this was the first full day if good weather after some challenges on the first two days. Most often we sort of wander off individually or in small groups to photograph, but on this late afternoon we all headed the same direction, following a stream up toward some high country locations that we knew about.

As we walked that way we frequently stopped at various points of photographic interest. First there was a cascade, then a waterfall that was flowing impressively following the previous day’s rain. Above this the trees became smaller and more widely separated, and too we were walking though timberline country, where meadows and boulder strewn terrain predominated. A tall ridge to our west eventually cut off the evening light, and I made this photograph just before I reversed course and started back towards camp.

We did quite a bit of walking on our August Manhattan visit. We have a (perverse, according to New Yorkers) habit of visiting during August, something that dates back to the days of summer vacation from my teaching work. But August isn’t exactly the most pleasant time to be in New York City… unless you are a fan of hot weather and ridiculous humidity levels. As a Californian, where we deal with the temperatures but emphatically not the humidity, I’m not one of those fans. Fortunately for us, on this visit the weather was actually quite pleasant.

Our walk on this day took us down into midtown, where we first stopped for an outdoor breakfast along one of the thoroughfares. (Here I discovered something new to me: “All you can drink morning cocktails” — you pay a higher fee and get bottomless cocktails for 90 minutes. Uh, no. Just no. We did not do that!) We resumed out walk, looped over and past the UN Plaza and then heading back toward the center of town, eventually heading back uptown on Madison, which appeared to have been closed for some sort of street market or fair.

This particular corner of the Sierra Nevada backcountry landscape became a bit of an obsession for me during out August backcountry photography foray. We camped nearby for a week, and every day we went out to explore and photograph portions of the surrounding alpine landscape. Our base camp was not far below the high country of open meadows and talus, which is my favorite kind of Sierra landscape.

With that in mind, it should probably be no surprise that I walked up into the area in this photograph several times. Access was quite close — a few hundred yards above our camp, after crossing a creek, I was in the lower reaches of the sub-alpine meadow, and from there it was a pleasant amble across the meadows, occasionally through some trees, and on up to the treelike and beyond. High in this bowl I found what I expected — a shallow lake replenished by snowmelt water coming down from high above.

A dense New England forest full of slender trees.

Slightly out of numerical order, here is another in the short series of photographs of New England woods from our late-August visit to (mostly) Vermont and parts of Massachusetts. To recap, we spent a week with a large family group in Southern Vermont, not far from Wilmington, where we rented a large place that we all shared. It wan’t primarily a photography trip — we spent more time talking, cooking, eating, and generally sitting around. But I did have a few opportunities to explore bits of the natural surroundings.

Again, the dense growth of these woods was unfamiliar to me. On the west costs I’m more likely to see relatively open forests or perhaps grasslands interspersed with deciduous trees. Here in Vermont the growth is thick , and it comes right to the edge of roadways and paths, leaving few opportunities for long views. So I often found myself walking along rural roads and photographing into this lovely foliage from its edge.
