Reflection Patterns, San Francisco

Reflection Patterns, San Francisco

Many layers of reflections on windows of downtown towers in San Francisco, California.

I’m crazy about the “reflections of reflections reflections…” that you can find in urbanized downtown areas when the light is just right. While the shapes and forms of the buildings are, I think, somewhat interesting, what intrigued me about this scene were the almost psychedelic shapes and colors of the warped, bent, and oddly juxtaposed reflections covering almost all of the shiny surfaces of the buildings. (Of course, all of that is a bit hard to see in this small online jpg version.)

This is definitely one of the photographs in my “urban landscape” category. I have to think about the light and the shapes and distance in much the same way I might if I were photographing in a natural canyon or deep valley. However, unlike “real” landscape photography, shots are these are almost always done hand held and shot fairly quickly while wandering around on foot.

Beneath the Bay Bridge

A pier beneath the west end of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge with downtown San Francisco, California.

The light was a challenge in this photograph, but I found the dense and somewhat out of kilter lines and forms of the pier, bridge, and downtown buildings interesting. The photograph was made from one of the piers along the Embarcadero that is used as a parking lot – extending out into the Bay a bit it gave me a view back toward the City over and through the intervening structures.

2nd and King Streets, Dusk

2nd and King Streets, Dusk

The intersection of 2nd and King streets in San Francisco as early evening light illuminates the Bay Bridge and downtown buildings.

This is yet another “take” on this scene from the upper level of the SF Giants’ AT&T Park, shot during a slow inning or two of a game against the Braves as evening was coming on over the Bay. I would understand if some began to wonder why I shoot the same scene so many times. In this case there are a bunch of reasons. On a practical level, I just like to get up and wander around the ball park during games. (Sorry… I can almost see the real fans cringing – but for me going to the game is about more than the game. :-) I also like to reshoot subjects and apply what I learned by shooting a particular scene before. I do not necessarily believe that the first take is always the best take. In this case I had learned somethings about the muni trains, the reflected light on the buildings, the composition, and the timing of the lights on the bridge. And the scene is most certainly not the same every time – this time I “discovered” the slowly increasing effect of the artificial light on King Street as the ambient light decreased.

So, there you have it. My excuses for posting what might seem like almost the same photograph I posted a couple weeks ago.

(A small technical note for those who are interested in such things. This was shot using a Canon 5D Mark II full-frame body with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS lens… handheld at 1/8 second, f/5.6 and ISO 800. Some people will find all of those details to be somewhat interesting, especially when I point out that the quality of this image is such that I’m positive it would print well at 16 x 24 or possibly even 20 x30 inch dimensions.)

Twilight in the Urban Forest

Twilight in the Urban Forest

Trees and the side of an office building are illuminated by evening light reflected from the windows of a nearby building.

There is more than meets the eye in this photograph, and even when you think you have figured out why there is more than meets the eye I think there will still be more that you may not yet have noticed. I’ll continue to be enigmatic and say that “all is not what it seems in this photograph.” :-)

I will say that I made the photograph while wandering around downtown San Jose, California on an “urban photo walk” over the weekend, hunting for interesting street and urban images. This and all the photos I made that afternoon and evening were made in traditional “street” style using a 35mm prime.
