Support structures under the Henry Hudson Parkway, Manhattan.

While things in New York City are not as grim as they were during the height of the pandemic, nor as bad as when we visited during the Omicron surge last winter, things are not yet completely back to normal. A lot better, yes. But when we visited in August the effects were still clear. People were back in the streets, but the crowds weren’t nearly as dense as before. And we still hesitated to go to some of the more crowded places that we enjoyed previously. So, on this afternoon we found ourselves killing time between a couple of planned events, so we took a walk over to and along a section of the Hudson River shoreline.

In this location sidewalks, paths, and stairs can take you down from the city itself of a riverside walkway and park, so we headed on down to join the others out for a walk, a run, or a bike ride. As the path descended it approached the base of this old structure that supports the parkway running along the waterfront. In a world of modern, sweeping and curving reinforced concrete structures, it is fun and interesting to come across older steel structures like this one.

A bridge emerges from thinning fog on a December morning along the Big Sur coast.

Somewhat to my surprise, I have yet another photograph from this December visit to the Big Sur coast. Actually, I should not be surprised to “discover” photographs among files left behind when I originally considered them. For some reason, this is not an uncommon experience at all. (I believe it was Gary Winogrand who waited for a considerable time before even developing his film.) I have some theories. One is that in the days right after making the photograph I have some ideas of what I expect it to be, and the actual image does not always come up to the imagined standard. But given time and some aesthetic distance from the image, its inherent, intrinsic potential starts to emerge on its own.

The subject here is a particular spot that I’ve stopped to photograph many times on my visits to the Big Sur coast. (Hint: It is not the bridge you probably think it is.) I remember thinking on more than one occasion that there was no new way to photograph the scene, only to come upon it in some particular set of conditions that I had not seen before. There are a few different elements in this version. First, the fog was quite special — a combination of low, coast-hugging fog and spray from the surf, with clear sky above that let the light create a backlit glow. Due to the particularities of season and time of day, I was able to point back toward the land and get the bright reflections on the water. The little bit of fence at the left is another new element. Typically when I had photographed here in the past I went to some effort to keep that fence out of the frame — but this time I decided to embrace it as part of the scene.

One thing that has fascinated me as I’ve spent more time reviewing old files during the pandemic is the variations in how much I recall about the original experience of making the images. In some cases the recollection is so clear that I literally remember almost everything about it. At the other end of the spectrum are photographs that I don’t even recall making — they come as almost complete surprises now. This photograph lies between the extremes. I do specifically recall this day and the places we visited, but I do not remember making this photograph and I’m not exactly sure of the precise location.

Scenes like this intrigue me, and when I slow down and look I find them everywhere. I could easily walk through here and barely register the surroundings at all, but sometimes when I’m attuned to what I see, such places come alive. There are, I think, some fun visual surprises here. First, note how full the scene is of those black railings — parallel to the walkway at the left, steeply angled upwards beyond the column, and dropping into the scene from the right margin. Then spend a moment trying to make sense of the ways all of the various lines relate to one another. Some (all?) are angled due to perspective convergence (both straight ahead and toward the left) and their actual inclines. There’s more, if you are interested…

Arch and Shadows

A Utah red rock country arch in a shadowed canyon.

It can seem that improbable features like this are everywhere in Southern Utah. While many are familiar from national parks like Zion and Arches, similar features are found in less accessible places, and if you poke around enough you can experience them in relative quiet and solitude. I’ve wondered why it is this way in Utah, and I think there are several explanations including that such features really are quite common, and some that warrant national park status are in non-park areas for reasons including uneasy compromises with extractive industries.

A group of us wandered into a lovely canyon, inauspicious at the start but with sandstone walls that soon began to tower and close us in from the world beyond. These are intimate places, where your awareness is mostly confined to the space between the canyon bends in front of and behind you, and where the quiet is only broken by the an occasional birdsong and by the gentle sounds of water.
