Mesquite Dunes, Cottonwood Mountains

The Mesquite Dunes and the Cottonwood Mountains late on a hazy afternoon, Death Valley National Park, California

The Mesquite Dunes are a well-known icon of Death Valley and are often photographed in the early morning or around sunset. I made this photograph at a somewhat different time – late in the afternoon but well before the golden hour light of evening. The sun was still high enough to illuminate the tops of the dunes and even the sides away from the sun, and the afternoon haze made the atmosphere blue and obscured the rugged features of the Cottonwood Mountains beyond the dunes and across the Valley.

If you look closely enough, you can find a number of features that characterize this area of the valley. The foreground flats are “filled” with plants that grow a good distance apart from one another, apparently due to the limited water. The edge of the dunes spills over slightly into the gravelly flat but then rises quite high. Beyond the dunes, and faintly seen through the haze, a giant alluvial fan slants down from higher mountains to the left. (It sometimes surprises visitors to see how much the terrain in this very dry place has been shaped by water.) Beyond the sloping fan, the rugged Cottonwood Mountains, part of the Panamint Range, begin to rise to quite high peaks.

Central Valley, Winter Dusk

A line of geese fly in front of the first clouds of an approaching winter storm front above California’s Central Valley.

This photograph was made at a late enough time in the evening that it was becoming hard to see in the same detail that the camera has. The sun had gone down and the light reflected up into the clouds was beginning to fade, and Central Valley haze filled the air, partially obscuring the details on anything more than a few hundred feet away.

We were surprised and pleased to have a spectacular sunset as the clouds of an incoming weather system that had early blocked the light were now lit up from below as the sun dropped to the horizon. The intense colors of the red clouds were almost too bright to photograph. Here I used a long lens to isolate a small section of the terrain to the west that held a group of silhouetted trees, with the Coast Range mountains beyond, and the sky turning all shades of purple, orange, and red. Although it may be difficult to see in this small jpg, a long line of geese is traveling from right to left high in the sky.

Dawn, New Years Day 2013

I didn’t manage to post a real New Years Day photo on New Years Day this year… since I was out and about well before dawn on that morning, thinking that it would be even more fun to greet the new year in the field than to just share a post about it! We were staying in the Sierra foothills and had enjoyed a wonderful New Years eve with friends in the area the evening before. Although we had planned to “call it a night” soon enough to turn in early in anticipation for a pre-5:00 a.m. wake-up call, it was after midnight when we finally got to bed.

We were up at 4:45 – yes, on New Years Day! – and out the door shortly after 5:15, and on our way out into the San Joaquin Valley, where a small group of us assembled at about 6:30 in the darkness. After sleepy “Happy New Year!” wishes we headed off into the first pre-dawn light to look for geese and cranes and other critters. Within a few minutes I stopped along the levee road by these trees to make my first real photograph of the new year as the first light began to turn high clouds over the Sierra a beautiful shade of pink.

Ross’s Geese in Flight, Fog

My EXIF data tells me that I must have made this photograph close to noon. In many cases, landscape and nature photographers, this one included, might well be off taking a nap (necessary after a 4:00 a.m. wake up alarm) or looking for lunch, but not on this day. There had been very thick fog when we assembled near the entrance to this Central Valley wildlife shortly after 6:00 a.m., and it showed little sign of clearing as we made our first circumnavigation of the place, looking for the birds that we could hear off somewhere in the gloom but which were quite difficult to actually see, much less photograph! By the time we worked our way around to the far end of the drive around the refuge, the fog began to thin just a bit – though the sun was still obscured – and we found our first big group of Ross’s geese, feeding and squawking wildly.

At first they mostly remained on the ground, walking en masse across the pasture land in which they had landed. Eventually we saw more of them airborne, flying in from or off to some distant place, or sometimes just moving to a different area of the pasture. Before too long, we saw the first explosive group lift-off with its shock of noise and motion as thousands of the birds lift off almost simultaneously and fill the air, sometimes so thickly that you literally cannot see through the flock at times. From then on, there was more or less steady activity of one sort or another and we had lots of opportunity to track flying birds. This group was making a turn over the flock in front of me, preparing to make their landing in the fog.
