I like to photograph from near the top of the steps next to the building at the Getty that houses the photography section. From here the view opens to the large gardens below, with buildings beyond and to the right. If you watch long enough you can find interesting compositions as people accidentally assemble themselves as they walk across this space.

This is another urban landscape from my New Years Day walk and shoot. This photograph and the one that follows (a yellow building with a “For Lease” sign) are almost directly across the street from one another – a colorful bit of industrial neighborhood for sure! Despite the weathered and repainted character of this detail, the overall building is actually in decent shape. There is something mysterious about it though with the green color(s) and the boarded up windows and the door with no handle.

Columns, wall, and walkway on a rainy day at the Getty Center, Los Angeles, California.

I have photographed this spot before, and it is a bit strange that I shoot it regularly when I visit the Getty. It is not exactly a prominent location at the Center – it is at the bottom of the stairs near the entrance to the cafe. I’m sure most people would just walk right past it, and I wouldn’t blame them given all of the obviously spectacular settings at the Center. However, I’m attracted to the three light colored poles, the reflective floor (especially in light rain), the angles of the walkway, and the way the far wall is lit.

Black and white photograph of columns, a tree, and roof in fog – Getty Museum, Los Angeles, California.

This photograph shows a detail of the columns and roof above the terrace at the Getty Center seen in my previously-posted photograph of this area. Again, the fog and rain have masked the distant view and created diffused lighting. I like the contrast between the constructed forms of the columns, roof, and faintly seen building and the single leafless tree.
