Sun breaks through morning fog along the Big Sur coast at the Little Sur River on a spring morning.

Try as I may, I cannot pass this spot without at least a brief stop. The hill (a future sea stack?) sits at the terminus of the Little Sur River, where it takes a meandering route across the beach before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Backed by the rugged cliffs of the Big Sur coast, it is a remarkable little scene, especially on a day like this when I found myself at the edge of the fog bank, and light came and went as the fog oscillated back and forth. Beams of light traversed the face of the distant faces and raced across the beach.

If you follow my posts you know that I live close enough to the Pacific Coast to go there and photograph for the morning, and that I’ve been going there for decades. The coast is as beautiful as always, especially when I arrive early enough to beat the tourist traffic, but it is showing some rough edges these days. The extent of recent wildfires is concerning, and areas still suffer from washouts that occurred during flooding. Given that last fact, it is ironic that drought is also affecting the landscape, and places that should be in the middle of their intensely green spring growth are already turning brown.

Coastal bluffs, morning fog and mist along the Big Sur coast.

Photographing along the Big Sur Coast in the early morning presents some challenges and some special opportunities. The challenge is straightforward — in almost all locations there are mountains to your east that block the morning light. This means that you won’t see the earliest eastern sunrise sky at all, and that the landscape is frequently all or partly in shadow. But one of the opportunities comes from the same source — light arriving along the coast just as the sun clears these obstructions often passes through narrow clefts and valleys, and when the air is full of fog and mist this can create a plethora of light beams.

Those beams are what I saw in this scene. The process of finding the composition here is one that I use a lot. I stopped at a familiar location that presents a very large and panoramic landscape featuring a famous icon. My first instinct was to photograph anything but that icon, so I framed a composition that took in a section of coast and surf running away from me to the south. After I made a few exposures of that subject, each of which tried to capture a different state of the surf, I became interested in the bluff at the far end of the scene. So I went with a very long focal length and honed in on this small part of the larger landscape, focusing on the beautiful shaft of light between the bluffs that lit up the fog and spray and highlighted sections of the surf.

The rugged cliffs of the Big Sur coast meet the Pacific Ocean under cloudy skies.

Although I was born in the Upper Midwest, I don’t think I could live there anymore — even though many aspects of the place are in my blood and feel comfortable to me. I recall visiting a few decades ago — and, honestly, generally enjoying myself — but watching the sun set and thinking about how many hundreds (more than a thousand, actually) of miles it is to the ocean. I can’t quite put the feeling into words, but it just seemed odd to this guy who has lived perhaps 25 linear miles from the Pacific Ocean for, well, more than a couple of decades.

I was thinking about this feeling as I visited the area in this photograph, the Big Sur Coast of California, the rugged interface between North America and the vast Pacific Ocean. The sense that there is an empty, unknown space that we don’t inhabit has long had a powerful effect on us, and here at the edge of the continent we can come face to face with a wilderness that most of us will never fully explore.

Bridge and Fog

A bridge emerges from thinning fog on a December morning along the Big Sur coast.

Somewhat to my surprise, I have yet another photograph from this December visit to the Big Sur coast. Actually, I should not be surprised to “discover” photographs among files left behind when I originally considered them. For some reason, this is not an uncommon experience at all. (I believe it was Gary Winogrand who waited for a considerable time before even developing his film.) I have some theories. One is that in the days right after making the photograph I have some ideas of what I expect it to be, and the actual image does not always come up to the imagined standard. But given time and some aesthetic distance from the image, its inherent, intrinsic potential starts to emerge on its own.

The subject here is a particular spot that I’ve stopped to photograph many times on my visits to the Big Sur coast. (Hint: It is not the bridge you probably think it is.) I remember thinking on more than one occasion that there was no new way to photograph the scene, only to come upon it in some particular set of conditions that I had not seen before. There are a few different elements in this version. First, the fog was quite special — a combination of low, coast-hugging fog and spray from the surf, with clear sky above that let the light create a backlit glow. Due to the particularities of season and time of day, I was able to point back toward the land and get the bright reflections on the water. The little bit of fence at the left is another new element. Typically when I had photographed here in the past I went to some effort to keep that fence out of the frame — but this time I decided to embrace it as part of the scene.
