When It Reigns I’m Poor

Graffiti covered, weathered door and brick walls, Manhattan.

These are, or so it seems, the words of “Mario” according to the inscription on this urban doorway. I’m always intrigued by the odd bits of street wisdom found among the less sophisticated graffiti and simple visual vandalism found in places like this. These texts often have an ironic, streetwise quality, but also reflect a simple view of the world, where the words are perhaps taken to be more profound than they actually are. That being said, I kind of like this one.

While those who read my posts know that I just returned from a visit to pandemic-plagued Manhattan, this photograph comes from an earlier visit a few years ago. Back then it was easier to simply head out and walk wherever I felt like going, as we did on this day. Now you can go out on the street — and it is perhaps safer than going indoors — but you are likely wearing a mask and avoiding other people.

Update June 21, 2022: The actual “Mario” contacted me, and you can read what he wrote in the comments below on this page.

Gentle sunset light on wilderness trees on a boulder-covered ridge, Yosemite National Park.

You have already seen these trees if you have been following along here in recent weeks. To quickly recap, on this evening in the Yosemite backcountry wilderness I went for a long looping walk out beyond the lake where we were camped. I climbed a ridge beyond the opposite shoreline, and followed its spine over a rounded granite dome before descending back to ward the lake on the other side. It was late in the season, and wildfire smoke hovered far to the west between my location and the setting sun. As the sun dropped toward the horizon its light came through the smoky sky and turned the landscape an intense red-orange color.

I stopped and quickly began to photograph, knowing that these lighting conditions would be very brief. When this happens the process of photography is anything but a slow and considered process. Instead my photography instincts kick in and I tend to work fairly quickly, hoping to get something before the ephemeral light is gone. Rather than perfecting a single “perfect” composition, I may try several different approaches in quick succession, working out the details by making photographs and adjusting. A photograph I shared recently focused on this same scene but it used a wider angle. Here I began to eliminate distractions from the larger landscape by tightening the composition.

Spring snow blankets trees in front of a Yosemite Valley granite cliff face

This past few days has been pretty busy, as I work on making prints for an exhibit that opens on June 2. It looks like the prints are now all made — but the work of trimming, matting, framing, and otherwise preparing them continues over the next few days. The exhibit is “Transitions: Winter Into Spring — Photographs by G Dan Mitchell and Friends.” It features photographs that I made during this year’s winter and spring Yosemite Renaissance artist-in-residency in the park, and photographs by a group of talented photographers and friends including Jerry Bosworth, Franka Mlikota Gabler, Charlotte Hamilton Gibb, David Hoffman, Vidya Kane, and Kerby Smith. The show opens at Gallery 5 in Oakhurst, just outside the park, on June 2 and runs through the end of the month. There is a public reception at the gallery on June 9. If you are in the area, please come and visit!

This photograph is not in the show, but it was made during the project. As the “Winter Into Spring” title of the show suggests, I was in the park frequently from February through the April, working in conditions that ranged from freezing cold and wintry right on through warm and sunny. This photograph came from an early spring day when one of the last snow storms of the season passed through the valley and dropped a few inches of snow — just enough to frost the trees and turn the meadows white. It didn’t last long – most of it melted by the following day, and when I returned a week later I photographed in warm spring sunshine.

Cliff in Sun, Trees In Shadow

The edge of a granite face caught in morning sun, with snow-covered trees in shadow

The little bit of sunlit granite cliff on the right side of this photograph has long intrigued me. When the light hits it a highlight is added to a scene that is often otherwise almost completely in shadow. The light only happens for a short period, since the sun has to rise above the thousands-of-feet-high cliff above and then find its way down at just the right angle. Basically, it is only going to happen in the morning at this time of year, and for a short time at that. On this day I photographed it just after new snow had fallen the night before, coating trees and granite with a thin layer of snow.

The color of this scene is perhaps also worth mentioning. I decided to “go with the blue” on this image. Deeply shaded areas that are illuminated by open sky are often far bluer than we might think, something that photographers soon learn to recognize. When we look at such a scene with our eyes and our brains visual processing system, our brain tells us that, for example, the snow in this scene is white. But objectively speaking it is very much NOT white — it is the blue of the sky. In many cases photographers — including me — will adjust the color of the blue shadows in post to make them a bit closer to how we recall the scene, but another option is to leave it just as blue as it actually is… which is what I’ve done here.
