Wildflower photography isn’t typically my main focus, especially in the desert. (An exception has been during one or two “super bloom” years, when there were sufficient wildflowers to make them a major part of the landscape.) However, traveling to such places with my wife, Patricia Emerson Mitchell, has made me much more aware of this component of the desert world. From watching her photograph wildflowers, often using a macro lens, I learned that there are flowers in places that I had regarded as being essentially desolate.

There are several things I like about the desert snapdragon. The very name reminds me of when I was a child, and I was intrigued by the snapdragon flowers that my mother grew in her yard. This desert version is nothing like those yard plants — it seems to pop up suddenly in the most unlikely places, pushing thick green leaves through remarkably rocky terrain and soon sending out these lovely little yellow flowers.

This is not typically the direction I point the camera… but sometimes there are interesting things to see right at your feet! I had stopped at a playa whose edge is right next to the main highway into Death Valley. I got out and wandered on to the playa with my camera. (This might be the world’s easiest walking.)

This playa is typically dry, and after the rare storms that bring enough rain to create mud, the playa surface dries out and cracks into interesting patterns. As I wandered around this visual playground I spied this rather unusual patten in the surface of teh playa.

A desert sand storm spreads dust high into the air above a sunlit mountain range.

You might imagine that this was a quiet and peaceful landscape scene, judging by the sort light and static nature of the photograph. You would be wrong. I was standing in gale force winds, with windblown sand flying everywhere, out of my vehicle just long enough to make a few exposures.

The haze filling the air is from a sand storm that was emanating from more or less my location, and which then carried the blown sand and dust northeast into desert mountains. In some places the cloud seemed to make it all the way to the summit of the mountain range, but in this spot it was clear, even through this thick air, that the sun was still shining on the ridgeline.

Morning light on eroded forms and desert mountains.

Often when I photograph in a familiar place I look at certain subjects, find them appealing, but just don’t quite yet know how to see them as photographs. Sometimes I attempt a photograph and end up dissatisfied. Other times I look and don’t even photograph. The far ridge in this photograph has been one of those subjects.

The ridge is very impressive — high, barren, and rugged — and it is easily visible from some very popular locations in Death Valley National Park. However, perhaps because access is not easy or possibly because better known features are nearby, I rarely see it photographed. On this spring morning I had been photographing one of those other locations, and I looked up to see the high clouds above the ridge and the backlight on the foreground hills… and it seemed like the right time to give this scene a try once again.
