Sometimes conditions work out just right and surprise me with an unexpected photographic opportunity. This was one of those times. I had been photographing a distant subject in wonderful light — unusual colors, haze, and some high clouds. I looked down at the beach directly below me, perhaps 15 feet away, and noticed fascinating patterns of sand textures, water draining back into the surf, and soft reflections of the cloudy sky. Without warning, a flock of sandpipers landed at the water’s edge. The scene may look quiet and still, but photographing it was anything but!

The photograph is (yet another) reminder that while preparation and adaptability are important, so much in landscape photography is entirely outside our control. While we have the ability to see and make choices about what we do with “it,” we do not determine the underlying conditions. And while I’m thinking about it, here’s hoping that you find plenty of “it” moments in 2023!

On the day after Christmas I headed over the hills to the nearby coast north of Santa Cruz. I knew that a big Pacific storm was on its way, and I expected that the increasing clouds would produce interesting conditions. I was right — high clouds muted the light but occasionally allowed beams of sunlight through, and the air was filled with mist and thin fog. All of this gave the landscape an unusual tint and muted the colors, producing a soft effect.

As I photographed the ocean, this flock of very active sandpipers appeared on the beach. They are fun birds to watch. They feed right at the edge of the surf, racing into the wet sand between waves, then racing back to escape the incoming surf. The whole time they stick together in fairly dense flocks. I saw this group about to be inundated, and I managed a few frames before the next wave chased them back onto the beach.

Pacific ocean surf washes sand among shoreline rocks along the California coast

I’m often on the look out for these little coastal vignettes, and this one surprised me while I was photographing something else. We had traveled over to the coastline between Santa Cruz and San Francisco with no particular goal in mind – well, except for stopping for a bite to eat in Santa Cruz and then heading up the coast in search of the fog-sun boundary that we hoped we might find somewhere north of Davenport. However, even though the fog was visible off-shore and occasionally sent a few wispy clouds over the coast itself, we never did get quite the fog we were looking for.

We finally stopped at an anonymous spot along the road where I though I might be able to make a photograph out of a scene of rocks and waves as the coast curved away to the north. But between the time I had seen the shot and the time we managed to turn around, park, and get gear out, the light that had caught my attention was gone. But, being stopped and all, and standing there with my camera on the tripod, I figured I might as well walk out toward the edge of the bluff. As I did so, I had another specific shot in mind, but while heading to the spot to make that photograph I also noticed these rocks at the water’s edge and made a mental note to “work” them a bit before leaving. Once I finished that other photograph of the larger scene, I tipped the camera and tripod down to point at these rocks and watched to get an interesting bit of sea-foam above them. (I’d be lying if I implied that it didn’t take a few exposures to get this one that I like.)

This is a scene I have photographed many times, as I continue to work on “seeing” and understanding its elements. (And as I work on trying not to duplicate other beautiful “takes” on this location that have been produced by other photographers whose work I respect a great deal!) As a matter of fact, the “many times” would have to include the many times I photographed it on this particular visit, as photographing moving water tends to be a bit of a game of percentages. While you can start to gauge some of the patterns of the water if you watch long and intently enough, in the end you have to take what you get to some extent. Fortunately, with digital cameras it is possible to improve the odds a bit since one can make a lot of exposures, with the only real cost being the great amount of time required to go through them all.

This photograph was made at just about the peak of the spring runoff season, and during a year that had featured well above average precipitation during the previous winter. In mid-June (about the time that Tioga Pass finally opened) there was water flowing everywhere – obviously in the many well-known creeks and rivers and waterfalls, but also in places where you might otherwise not expect to see flowing water. Impromptu seasonal streams were everywhere, flowing across granite and through forests and often spilling right across the roadways. The object in this photograph was to try to shoot straight into the maelstrom of the current as it dropped down a steep hillside, twisting and turning as it passed through a narrow, rocky area.
