Mono Lake, Mountains, Morning
“Mono Lake, Mountains, Morning” — Early morning autumn light on Mono Lake and distant desert mountains.

Part of the challenge of photographing a familiar subject is finding a different perspective on it. This is especially true with “iconic” subjects that everyone has seen, and which we know by way of familiar views. If you think about any famous place you can probably visualize the scenes I’m thinking of — familiar views of familiar things. (I’m not against them. In fact, it is an interesting challenge to try to make those views different.) There are several familiar approaches to photographing Mono Lake. Yes, I’ve done them, too!

But this is not one of those familiar views. For one thing, the camera position here is not one that most people visiting the lake would think of or even know about. It is a pretty good distance from the lake — in fact the photograph was made with a very long lens. It is also elevated, up in mountains where sage meets aspens. I photographed in the early morning on a clear day, when the low morning sunlight was angling across the landscape from the right.

Sierra Pines

Sierra Pines
“Sierra Pines” — Dense forest of small, high elevation pine trees in the Sierra Nevada.

These lodgepole pines could be anywhere in a wide range of places in the Sierra Nevada — it is a very common tree found at higher elevations. Its form ranges from tall and upright, through slightly bent (like these trees at the edge of a high forest) to twisted and warped trees growing in rocky annd exposed locations. In the Sierra, lodgepoles are your friends, and you see them everywhere. You have undoubtedly walked among them and camped beneath them.

I photographed this scene in a high valley just outside Yosemite National Park, near the eastern entrance at Tioga Pass. I was up there during autumn to photograph aspens when I got sidetracked by some new snow above this area. Intimate photographs of these trees are often difficult in bright light since the contrasts can be harsh. But shadow light is softer and more forgiving, muting highlights and filling the shadows.

Aspens and Evening Shadows
“Aspens and Evening Shadows” — Long evening shadows creep across aspen groves in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

This photograph comes from one of those evenings when I almost packed up and left too soon. At this location there is beautiful late afternoon back-light on aspen groves in the fall, but then the sun quickly drops behind higher peaks and “turns out the lights.” That had already happened on the trees that were my primary subject, and I thought it was time to leave. But hen I noticed that the long shadows from the peaks were stretching across the trees and the rolling hills of this Eastern Sierra landscape.

It is hard to know when to stick around to see what will happen versus when it is time to move on to a different subject. I wish there was a simple rule to apply to this conundrum, but I’ve never discovered it. Sometimes staying is the right choice, but sometimes I stick around and the light just… goes away. And, of course, sometimes when I move on I do encounter something remarkable that I might have missed. However (you saw this coming, right?) I’ve also driven or walked away to look for a better subject only to be stumped.

Alpine Ridge, Evening
“Alpine Ridge, Evening” — Golden hour light glances across a shattered, rocky ridge, John Muir Wilderness

There is a common notion that landscape photography is a slow and deliberate activity, that we stand in front of a static landscape and carefully work out the right composition as the landscape awaits. This can happen, but the landscape is often quite dynamic, particularly when it comes to changing light. Beams of light between clouds can move across the scene, sunset light is ephemeral, rain showers can momentarily reveal or obscure features.

I made this photograph near our campsite on a lovely late-summer evening. It was during the last half of our weeklong stay, so we were settling in. As the day ended we were all wandering about looking for photographs. As the sun dropped to the west, deep shadows began to fill the great valley in front of us and then creep up the slopes. A last beam of light fell across the near ridge, and then was gone moments after I photographed it.
