At the Starting Line - American Velodrome Challenge

Intense concentration on the faces of riders waiting at the starting line for their event to begin.

This is a close up shot of a group of riders at the starting line just seconds away from starting their qualifying heat in the keirin event at the American Velodrome Challenge. For those who aren’t familiar with bicycle track racing, in the keirin the first few laps feature the riders drafting behind a motorcycle. After the motorcycle brings the riders up to speed it drops away and a very intense sprint follows. In the photograph the riders can probably hear the motorcycle approaching from behind – as it passes they will take off.

Brick Wall and Shutter, Glo’s

Brick Wall and Shutter, Glo's

A brick wall with a few colorfully painted bricks and a gray shutter – front of Glo’s Restaurant, Seattle, Washington.

I was in the Seattle area this past weekend – and, among other things, this meant that I got my Fathers Day breakfast at my favorite breakfast place in Seattle, Glo’s in the Capitol Hill area. (The smoked salmon eggs benedict is almost worth the flight to Seattle all by itself.) There is always a wait for a table at Glo’s since it is both small and popular. While waiting for our table we first visited a nearby book store and then wandered back to the restaurant. I noticed the odd painting bricks and the juxtaposition with the darker gray shutter while waiting to be called.

Pipe, Sidewalk, Wall with Tree Shadow

Early evening shadows from a nearby tree fall on shop wall behind leaf littered sidewalk and pipe barricade.

A theme on this day’s urban walk was the patterns cast by late afternoon tree shadows on a variety of walls. This example is very close to my home, and the scene is truly unremarkable – you might think of it almost as a “photograph of nothing.”

Building Detail, Bodie

“Building Detail, Bodie” — An old building in the Bodie ghost town.

Yes, there really is snow falling in this photo. You might be able to see it a bit if you click on the thumbnail to see the somewhat larger size. I was caught – somewhat pleasantly – by surprise when I encountered this rather cold weather at the end of May in 2006.

Update 2025: Bodie is a large ghost town east of the Sierra Nevada that is a California State park. The place is maintained in state of arrested decay — not restored to be like new, but not allowed to decay and disappear like typical ghost towns. It is located in pretty tough country — the sagebrush desert of the western edge of Basin and Range territory. It can be very hot and dry out here in the summer, but it is also one of the coldest places in the West in the winter. On this visit I caught a surprise late-season light snowfall.
