Winter dusk light on the Pacific Ocean near the Marin Headlands

This is a photograph from all the way back in January, when we had driven north across the Golden Gate with no particular plan in mind, but perhaps thought about making some photographs. We had been in San Francisco for some other purpose, had some time, and figured we use it by crossing the bridge. By the time we ended up north of the bay, we discovered that the day was going to end very soon, and that we would run out of light. Yes, we were not really prepared! We quickly got back to the car and headed to a familiar iconic location, the Conzelman Road area of the Marin Headlands, from which panoramic views of the entrance to San Francisco Bay are available.

When we arrived I was initially not very excited about the photograph potential. I know this probably sounds odd to some who have longed to see that view back toward San Francisco, or who have perhaps only seen it once or twice. But I pass this way fairly often, and after a while the novelty of a typical day here wears off and I begin holding out for more special conditions. So where we stopped I did not initially take out my camera gear — instead I simply played tourist and enjoyed the spectacular scene. However, as I looked at it I began to notice a few things that seemed interesting. At first there were some light beams coming across the dark land at the lower left, though they are no longer really visible in the photograph. They I began to notice the turbulent patterns on the surface of the water passing through the Golden Gate as the tide turned. And then I could see that there was going to be some interesting color in the winter sky above the ocean. So, in the end, I did get the camera out to make a few photographs.

This cathedral of redwood trees still brings me to a stop every time I walk up the main valley at Muir Woods National Monument. Typically I arrive very early in the morning, often before the park opens, when I can have the trail almost to myself. (I’m happy to share “my” park with the small number of other early morning visitors, who are usually very quiet.) This row of big trees is in a spot near where several trails meet up, and the light can range from deep shade to filtered sun.

The light is the tricky thing when photographing here. People are often surprised by just how little light may make it down through the canopy of the redwood forest. On this morning there was a layer of high clouds that muted the light, with only occasional breaks allowing more direct light. As a result, this was a 13 second exposure! The idea here was to find a “wall of trees” composition, with some depth from additional trees perhaps visible in the gaps among the main foreground group. I liked the visual dissonance of the single slender bay tree trunk curving across the scene to the left.

A freighter heads out of the Golden Gate and into the Pacific Ocean on a winter morning

I was on my way to a location north of the Golden Gate Bridge, having left home while it was still dark and crossing the bridge as the sky just begin to lighten. As I often do when I pass by here, I left the main highway for a short time and went up a ways into the Marin Headlands to see what sort of early morning light might appear over the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The lights of the City were still on at this early hour, so I first photographed in that direction.

There was a variety of types of clouds around the Bay—fog to the south and east, high clouds above, and a bit of general haze everywhere. As the sun came up behind the East Bay clouds and fog there was a bit of color, though the effect was subtle. A bit later this very large freighter approached the bridge as it prepared to leave the bay. It was one of the largest that I have seen pass beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. I went back to shooting other subjects, but my attention periodically went back to this ship as it moved farther off shore. Eventually a bit of muted sunlight hit the boat and some light came to the higher clouds as it headed on toward an off-shore fog bank and then, I imagine, a much longer voyage across the Pacific.

A single trillium flower rises about leaves against a dark background

For a variety of reasons I decided to make this a black and white photograph, even though the trillium flower is a beautiful thing to see in color, especially when softly lit by light filtering down through the redwood forest and when there is a dark, amorphous background. Because the colors can be striking, perhaps the pure form of the flower may be more visible in black and white. In addition, in many ways working in monochrome permits me more flexibility in the post-processing stage.

These flowers blossom every March at Muir Woods, the closest place I know where I can reliably find them. After a number of years shooting there I have a pretty good idea of both where and when to find them, and this flower was along one of the trails where hundreds of the flowers can appear during a short window just before the start of spring. This year I visited perhaps a week after the peak—though there were still new plants pushing up from the ground—and the drought seems to have reduced the number and quality of the flowers a bit. But a single flower is still enough to make a photograph!
