A Bologna, Italy sidewalk cafe a few minutes before midnight on a warm summer evening.

Our August trip took us from Germany, where we spent five days in Heidelberg, south toward Italy. We drove, stopping for the first night in Munich, and then continuing on the Bologna for a night. Because we got a late start from Munich we didn’t arrive in Bologna until around sunset. We made our way to our (somewhat unusual — but a story for another time) hotel, got settled, and then decided it was time to find some dinner and look around a bit.

So we emerged from our abode onto a darkened street and soon realized that Bologna was, at least at this time on this evening, nothing at all like the northern European places we had come from. (An experienced ex-pat with how we traveled explained that Bologna isn’t exactly on the same travel map as a lot of other Italian cities.) The streets were dark, as most of the meager street lights had not yet come on. The area we were in seemed to have no vegetation at all. The streets were virtually deserted. I said that it had a kind of post-apocalyptic feeling. We found a nice restaurant (on another virtually deserted street) and sat down almost alone to have dinner. The experienced member of our group said to wait a bit, that at 9:00 or so it was still too early for many people, and that big groups would soon appear, trying to get out after the heat of the day. He was right. Soon others came to the restaurant, and when we visited a nearby square after eating we found lots of people, including this group at a cafe, just a few minutes before midnight.

Looking up a narrow street in the West Village

I like old photographs of cities, and especially of big cities like New York. For obvious reasons they tend to be in black and white. Once I started photographing these same subjects and making some of the photographs black and white, I began to notice that things in such places often look far more like they had in the past and that the supposed modern nature of such scenes is not at all obvious when abstracted by the camera.

I made this photograph from an elevated position along the High Line Park path that runs along a portion of the western side of Manhattan. In order to spot much here that is unique to the current time, I have to look closely — the overall impression is almost timeless. Yes, the vehicles are modern (at least for now), there are some traffic barriers in the distance that are a fairly new presence, and a very close look reveals somewhat modern attire on a few of the pedestrians.

Fog obscures a coastal forest at Point Lobos State Reserve

Many people who don’t know the California coast imagine it to be a warm and sunny place. It can be, but often it is actually foggy and damp and cold — and not a place where you’d want to lie on your towel trying to work on your tan! That iconic sunny weather does occur, especially if you go farther south, but the cold and foggy weather is more typical. Surprisingly, I much prefer the cool and foggy to the clear and sunny, and I don’t think I’m the only photographer who would rather see almost any conditions other than blue sky clear days.

On this January day I headed over to Point Lobos after hearing that there would be both clouds and big surf. In many places in this part of California the coastal hills drop precipitously and directly (or nearly so) straight into the ocean. Here at Point Lobos there is an area of flat, forested headland between the ocean and the mountains, but right behind the park the mountains do rise in layers, and on a day like this one the details of the successively higher ridges often disappear into the fog.

Powerful winter surf washes over rocks at Point Lobos.

I have gone to Point Lobos for decades, beginning when I was a child and my family would visit. I especially remember exploring the accessible tide pools. Today I especially like to go there on foggy days or in the winter, when the raw power of the Pacific Ocean is most visible, with winter storms churning up huge surf.

It was on such a day that I visited last January — in fact, reports of high surf were almost certainly what made me decide to visit that day. Because this coastline faces west, in the morning the coastal hills, being to the east, are often in shadow. To make this photograph I found an outcropping from which I could look back to the southwest toward the shore and juxtapose the rear of a huge wave washing over offshore rocks with the dark and ominous face of the mountains rising behind in shadow.
